Getting into the computer science program

How hard is it? I'm considering going to UW, but I'm worried that I won't be able to get into computer science. How competitive is the application process? How many people actually get in?

im also really interested in the computer science graduate program at uw.. please "throw" some light into this matter. :)

I would suggest that you look at the UW's CSE website as it explains how they run their Direct Admit program. That said, I do know that it is competitive. Last year they offered spaces to about 50 incoming freshmen expecting that some 30 of them would accept the offer. I also think they were surprised when nearly ALL of those came to the UW. Not sure what that means for this year's class of hopefuls...

We went with our son to a CSE orientation last fall and asked, based on his stat's, what they thought his chances of getting in to the program directly. The gal said his stat's "look pretty good". My S is a 3.98 GPA (unweighted) taking all AP classes with a 2320 SAT.

One thing you absolutely must do to get into the program as a freshman is list Computer Science or Computer Engineering as your intended major. Then you are automatically considered for Direct Admit. I also have heard through another forum on this site, that females have a much better chance simply because so many fewer apply and they are actively encouraging women into the program.

My S was offered a spot in the Direct Admit yesterday. He was notified via email. He was accepted into the University back in early January.
