Hello I'm a senior I'm from Oakland, California. My dream school would be UCLA.I have had many troubles in my first two years of high school I failed a majority of my classes but I was enrolled into a new school where I've made up almost all of my freshman & sophomore requirements with only As and one B and done all my junior requirements with all As. At the school I go to I work at my own pace and it's all on the computer so I can make up a semester of classes in a week.I have done classes on the side with a independent studies program from BYU to make up more credits and have aced them too. Sadly at my new school I cannot take AP or honors classes since they aren't offered so I have to do them too with independent studies online.I'm taking one AP class over the summer & will be taking AP classes throughout next school year and college classes at a local community college. I have turned my whole life around in a period of less than a year with applying all I have to my academics & leaving a life of being gang affiliated, fighting, and selling drugs alone. I do some volunteer service on the side with working with a English in action program on the UC Berkeley campus where I help foreign students and there significant others improve there English skills. I have also just finished a paid peer mentor program with CYGNET where I worked with pre-teen and teen girls. I'm looking for more volunteer programs where I can work with at risk youth coming from Oakland to help get them on the right track. I recently took the SAT and scored a 1800 with my first time taking it I'm doing studying on the side and might take SAT prep class to raise my sore to a 2100 or higher. I also plan on taking the ACT and scoring a 29 or higher on that. I'm mixed with black ,Mexican , and white but listed on my transcript as black. So realistically what are my chances to get into UCLA with all the story of my background which I will put on my personal statement and my grades & test scores. I swam for my old schools swim team in my freshman year but other then that I have done no ECs. Advice will be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Good:
- You are African-American
- You have good EC’s (sports, tutoring, programs, volunteering, community outreach)

Okay:
- If you do get a 2100 on your SAT you will be on average
- Your GPA should be good with just A’s and B’s

Bad:
- Lack of AP, IB, honors classes
- Bad start

So…I think you have a low chance of getting into UCLA, you see there are a lot of people with better stats than yours, 4.3 GPA, 2100+ GPA and tons of extracurriculars that are also applying. I live in San Leandro, 5 miles north of Oakland so I know what it takes to get into these schools. It’s great that you have turned your life around, I love people like you, but I think you should set your expectations a little bit lower, getting into a good college won’t solve everything. I wish you the best of luck though.

My dream school are UC Davis, UC Irvine and Cal Poly SLO, I’m applying with a 4.12 GPA and 1900~ SAT. Even though I’ve taken AP classes and have had a high GPA since freshman year, you look better than I do with those extracurricular. Just please…in your essays EXPLAIN YOUR LIFE! AND WHAT YOU HAVE DONE FOR YOUR COMMUNITY!!!

Thank you so much for commenting!I’m looking mostly to apply to csulb & csuci as main schools but I just wanted to see where I stand with UCLA.I know I am competing with the best of the best for UCLA but it never hurts to try Thank you again this journey for me with pulling my life together has been the hardest thing I’ve ever done so far.I wish you the best of luck with applying to your schools & congrats on such a high GPA!
