So im currently in second semester of my junior year. For my first 2 years of high school i lived in a different state and went to a school that only offered AP Literature and AP calc (neither of which i could take as a freshman/sophomore). The school also had accelerated math classes, but we werent allowed to take them unless we were sophomores. Now im a resident of Michigan, and i really want to get in, because there are lots of APs at my new school but they all need prerequisites that i wasnt able to take since i was at a different school.
These are my total advanced classes (including senior year:
Honors english 9
Honors english 10
Honors US government
Honors chemistry
AP Lang.
AP Lit.
AP psych.
So when i send in my transcript to Umich, should i let them know that i wasnt able to take certain advanced classes at my old school? I dont want them thinking that I was incapable of taking advanced classes; i just wasnt given the option to.
I think you should talk to your guidence counselor about his/her including that information in his/her letter. That way you don’t give up precious words in your material to that. It would also enhance the veracity of the claim and would not seem to be just an excuse. But if he/she can’t, then yes you should. It is the GC who will check that you have taken the most rigorous schedule so that comment would best be made by the GC.
No. Most schools limit and/or bar fresh/sophs from AP classes. Additionally, most schools send a profile which lists fun things like graduation requirements, academic policies, GPA by decile/quintile, etc. Here is an example. If further clarification is still needed, have your GC address it.
Agree with #2. Make sure the GC is aware of your situation as the school profile only covers your current school.
I’m in a similar boat, feeling behind after moving to my new school sophomore year and not being able to apply to or get into a magnet program that my friends are in. Mostly colleges are looking for you to do the best with what you had, and understand that you wouldn’t take an AP class if you already have a credit for it. I think AP classes are more representative by being a difficult class, not just being an AP class. I will be graduating with 5 AP credits and will have taken 6 AP classes and many honors classes. I got into UM early action. Good luck!!
i got accepted and these are the classes I took (limited to honors/AP):
9th Grade
-Biology Honors
-Humanities 9 (which is English 9 Honors and History 9 Honors combined)
-Geometry Honors
10th Grade
-AP Biology
-Chemistry Honors
-Algebra 2/Trigonometry Honors
-Humanities 10 (Eng 10 H/ History 10 H)
-AP European History
11th Grade
-AP Chemistry
-AP Language and Composition
-Pre-Calculus Honors
-French 4 (which is considered kind of an honors in my school because it is weighted)
-Humanities 11 (Eng 11 H/ History 11 H)
-Humanities Seminar (a class about European culture and artwork)
12th Grade
-AP Government
-College Economics
-College French 5
-AP Calculus AB
-AP Physics 1
-AP Literature
Hope I remembered them all! All of my APs might be the reason that they accepted me because my ACT score was only 28.
“How many APs?” can only be considered in the context of what each individual school offers.
I was accepted after taking 8 AP classes(Including Senior Year). My school offers 20 AP classes.
My school offers something like 15 APs, I took one sophomore year, three junior year, and am taking four senior year. I got 5s on all of mine to date.
My school offers 5 Honors classes and 19 AP classes. I took 5 Honors and 10 AP classes, and I recently got into UMSN.
Freshman:
English Honors
Biology Honors
Sophomore:
English Honors
Chemistry Honors (weighted)
AP European History
Junior:
English Honors (weighted) (my school did not offer AP Lang as a course until my senior year)
AP Biology
AP United States History
AP Calc AB
Senior:
AP Lit
AP Government
AP Economics
AP Chemistry
AP Calc BC
AP Psychology
I got a 30 on my ACT. I honestly don’t know how I got in considering my score wasn’t that high, I only took 10 AP classes, and I didn’t have a whole lot of extracurriculars. However, the average student at my school takes around 6 or 7 AP’s, so people consider my schedule to be harder than that of an average student. I am in the top 14% of my class, and am out of state (which may be why umich accepted me).
Accepted LSA (OOS). Go to a private school that doesn’t offer “honors” classes but instead claims that all courses are of that standard. 3.73 GPA. School doesn’t weight grades or rank students.
SAT: 1950
AP Eng Lang - last year - 3
AP Human Geo - last year - 5
AP Enviro Science
National Honor Society
My stats seem much lower than most people and yet 3 students at my school were accepted with similar ones.
Hello, I’m currently a junior and i really want to get into UofM, but I feel like im gonna be below average in the application pool.
My HS offers 16 total AP classes, and by the end of my senior year, I’ll have taken only 4 APs and 4 honors classes:
AP language and composition
AP psych
AP literature
AP Euro
Honors English 9
Honors english 10
Honors Gov
Honors chem
I would have taken AP US history and AP gov, but at the HS that I went to for my 9&10th grade years didnt have any APs and my GC said it wouldnt make sense to retake it as an AP class if I already had the credits for those 2 classes. If I had gone to my current HS for all four years, i would have a total of 6 APs and 4 honors which is why I feel so behind.
I really want to get in, but a lot of my friends who are also applying to UMich have taken almost all the AP classes available at my school. If you got accepted (or rejected), how many APs did you have? Dont know whether or not I should give up on hoping that I’ll get in Im going to be applying EA to LSA, im in the top 12% of my class and im in-state, if that helps at all. Thanks
