Getting ready for move-in

thanks RickMan

Now that housing assignments are out, you can see layouts of all the dorms at this link: [Resident Hall Maps - Pomona College](http://www.pomona.edu/administration/campus-life/room-draw/room-maps.aspx). If you go to “room details” you can even get room dimensions, which is irrelevant until your student knows his actual room number.

So are your kids happy with the draw? Did anyone get a single? A spot on North Campus, accidentally?

My D got a single in Harwood. She is ecstatic about the single although she wrote everywhere she could on the housing form that she wanted one. She has “met” most of the kids in her sponsor group through facebook also. This is getting very exciting:)

Hi, NJ Mom of 2! I also have a single in Harwood, so I’ll more than likely meet your daughter in a few weeks. I’m very happy with my housing assignment.

Harwood got remodeled in the summer of 2008, so everything’s pretty new. Of course, only Mudd-Blaisdell has AC, but that’s really only necessary for maybe a few weeks in August and a few in May - and it’s counterbalanced by small rooms, especially in Blaisdell. Wig in particular has very large rooms, but they’re all doubles with the exception of a handful of singles.

And FauxNom, as nice as North Campus is, no freshman should want to live there. South Campus is where the freshmen bonding happens. :)

Exactly! That’s why I said accidentally  My D got a double and has already met some of her sponsor group on Facebook too. It makes it all very real. She’s excited to meet everyone in person.

Thanks for that link to the room information, FauxNom!

My son just received his housing assignment today and is in a double in Lyon. Unfortunately, he could not find his roommate on Facebook (are there really teens without a facebook account?) I think he will try to call him today or tomorrow.

I’m just happy to know a bit more about where he will be living! :)

Since we are traveling out to SoCal, DH and I decided to spend a few extra days vacationing. We are planning on going to the Palm Springs area (yes I know it will be hot, but I believe they are giving rooms at beautiful resorts away this time of year). I am about to book a room at LaQuinta - but does anyone have any other suggestions??

NJ Mom:

La Quinta is beautiful part of the Coachella Valley. Close enough to easily drive up to Palm Desert or the much older Palm Springs town area for shopping and dining alternatives, but quiet, secluded and luxurious.

We typically stay at the historic La Quinta Resort in one of their “casitas”. La Quinta is a lovely, older resort which is well-kept and has a more intimate and personal feel than the bigger “filing cabinet” hotels. For example, rather than one hectic, over-populated mega pool, they have a series of multiple pools in lush “private” courtyards surrounded by clusters of casitas. Most times we were the only guests using “our” pool.

Superb tennis and golf facilities abound. You might want to check it out as an option. Deals should be pretty good at this time of year…

Good luck!

I was wondering if any of you knowledgeable parents or students could share any information about Wig Hall? My daughter has been assigned to a first-floor double. I’ve seen the residence hall maps and room details (thanks for the link, FauxNom) but would love any other details. Thanks!

Thanks enkephalon  When I said “La Quinta” I meant staying at the resort. I’m definitely going to book it now!

Glad to hear it, NJ Mom.

I’m sure you’ll have a wonderful time there with your family!

Does anyone know the size of the windows at Harwood? Or what is already on the windows? We might need to invest in blackout drapes. The room assignment just says there are two windows, nothing more. Also, I hear Claremont Mckenna will loft beds for you if requested. Pomona apparently doesn’t offer this service. Any ideas? The room looks small even for a single.
Thanks

RMF: I lived on Wig 1 when I was a freshman, so I’d be happy to tell you a bit about it. Wig is primarily doubles, and they’re all nice and big (around 200 sq ft) and square, so that it’s easy to arrange furniture. Each roommate has a very large closet that you could even fit the bookcase into if you wanted. The whole dorm is in very nice condition as it was remodeled in 2005. The common areas on the first floor include a large common room with couches, tables and a Steinway piano; a kitchen; a small computer lab with two computers; and a patio with grills. Laundry facilities are downstairs in the “basement,” which is really not a basement and houses students as well.

Houstonmom: Are you thinking of lofting the beds into a bunk arrangement or just have them a little higher? Pomona’s not going to do it for you, but they do provide the pegs for bunking (you might want to get in touch with the Office of Campus Life about requesting those). If you just want to raise the bed a few inches higher, you can find bed lofters that go underneath the four bedposts at stores like Bed Bath and Beyond and Target, although you can also check with Campus Life to see if they have any.

chopsticks, thanks so much! Our daughter will especially be happy about being able to fit a bookcase into the closet. Thanks too, for the info you posted regarding the meal plans. Very helpful! RMF

Chopsticks. We have a friend attending CMC he said he just called to request lofting. Do Pomona Beds work like this as well? [Bed Heights, Housekeeping, Facilities and Campus Services, Claremont McKenna College](http://www.claremontmckenna.edu/facilities/housekeeping/bed_heights.php)
thanks so much

Son lived in Wig as a freshman and Harwood as a soph both times just requested lofting stuff from the housekeeping staff present during move-in and they , according to him, brought it right over. By the way the Harwood mattress had metal punching out of both sides he mentioned that and an hour later he had a new one. This fall he is doing study abroad so I won’t be going down to Claremont until Jan to haul his stuff down or Feb for family weekend. Best wishes to freshmen and their families hope it is not too hot during your move-in.

70’s Grad. Thanks so much. Coming from Texas where it was 104 today, the thought of no AC seems unbearable, mid 80’s will seem cool to us. Good tip about the bed, not sure we need to loft, but the option would be nice. Everyone tells us extra seating in the rooms is important. Any good ideas? I hear most students get futons or small couches. Seems like a tight fit. I hope your son enjoys himself this fall.
Thanks

Sons’s Harwood room was part of what is called a friendship suite really just three single rooms and a double. The rooms shared a patio where the guys kept some furniture. Lofting the bed really increases storage space. Put the fridge and other stuff down there. Got a floor fan the first year probably last all four years. The room in Harwood was kind of below ground level with the fan you really don’t need air conditioning. We are also from an area where the summer temps ofter exceed 100 so my son was used to the heat. Went to Ikea in Covina (12 or so miles from Claremont) and got this. [IKEA | Sofa beds | Sofa-beds | SOLSTA | Sofa bed](<a href=“Products - IKEA”>Furniture - Shop Furniture Online & In-store Near You - IKEA). Pretty tight fit but he liked it and gave him a spare bed. Some kind of rug is nice too. If your lucky you might find some of the stuff here. [ReCoop/Clean Sweep - Pomona College](http://www.pomona.edu/Administration/sustainability/programs/recoop.aspx) The first year I ordered stuff like the fan online so we wouldn’t have to haul it all down there. My wife is part of the group the college has that calls freshman parents to welcome them and answer questions they might have. Kind of neat to share the excitement of the new parents every year.

Your sons room sounds nice. I think IKEA will be our first stop.
Thanks for the sofa bed idea. We are excited and nervous, as you can tell by all the questions, this is our first to go to college. Thanks again.
