I'm applying to several universities through the CommonApp, and I've come to the point where I have to invite people to send letters of recommendation. How do I send letters of rec from people who aren't a school official? I have private music teachers and others who are willing to write me great recommendations, though I don't see an option to do so on the app. How can I do this, if it's even possible?

They do it the old fashioned way - they write a letter, copy it x times and stuff it into the pre-stamped and addressed envelopes that you have provided them - and then they all go to the Post Office. Since this isn’t a school rec, there is no form they need to fill out and include (although much of the same info would be useful - who they are, how long they’ve known you, how you compare to others they’ve taught, etc…)

Make sure their letters include your name, social security number and any ID number that the school has provided so it gets linked to your file quickly.

sergey: you should send ONE additional letter of recommendation maximum. Many rec letters are not wanted since they inevitably repeat each other.

If you are inclined to disbelieve this advice, then can I direct you to search “additional recommendations” on this very site.

Agree with T26E4, 1 supplemental LOR max.

So… I should print out this (https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/Docs/DownloadForms/2013/2013TeacherEval1_download.pdf) form and give it to the non-school official I want to get a rec from?

And thanks for the advice, T26E4!

That’s fine. Or just a typed note is fine as well. It’s not the format that matters for the supplemental LOR, but the content.
