I was a member of my schools National Honor Society, but it looks like I may be getting kicked out and I was wondering if this might get me rescinded from college. After I joined my schools NHS early my senior year, I realized that they only accepted community service that was done through tutoring students in other classes, while most of my community service is done through other things, like coaching middle school debate. Because of this, early this year I decided to essentially drop out of NHS-- I stopped going to meetings, didn’t put it on my college application, or really have any interaction with the organization. I reasoned that if it wasn’t on my college application, it shouldn’t have any effect if I drop out.
However, recently I learned that apparently my membership in NHS is apparently in my secondary school report and that they write your school a letter if you’re kicked out. Would this get me rescinded from college, especially the Ivies?
I’d talk to your GC – if you can prove you didn’t put it on your apps, maybe they will skip the letter. I doubt it will result in you being rescinded in any case.
You’re possibly the source of a quarter million dollars to the college No one cares about NHS . Go tell them to kick you out and laugh maniacally as you dance out the door
Agree with talking to your guidance counselor. Perhaps also let the NHS advisor know that you did not include NHS on your college application and ask that a letter not be sent as it would just create confusion. If a letter is sent I would probably send a brief email to your adcom and let him/her know the story in advance of getting the letter to avoid any questions. You were accepted without NHS on your application so being part of the organization is clearly not important – you just don’t want anyone to think for a nanosecond that you might have been kicked out for doing anything wrong.
