I was kicked out of nhs at the end of junior year. I started out the second semester on probation, and then I had to miss two events which resulted in negative hours…and then I worked off my butt all the hours but then I had 1.7 hours left. I really did a lot of hours and if I only had 1.7 hours left and got kicked out, do you think all the hours I did were worth it? I contested but then they said they want to stand by their decision because if they make one exception they have to make a bunch…Also, should I put that I was a part of NHS on my college applications? Since I got kicked out would it look bad? I was thinking I can just put the summer project I did but not affiliated with NHS…
Personally I’d just leave it off of your application. Colleges don’t care much about NHS but getting into NHS and leaving it junior year may be a red flag. You can include your volunteer work on the application, just no need to have it as being done to get hours for NHS.
See if others have a different opinion.
Agree that you don’t need NHS and yes you can put the summer project you did and not link it to NHS. Hopefully you will have other activities that show your involvement in school and the community. No one will question why you didn’t list NHS.
Nope; I agree. As I’ve said before elsewhere, it is my belief that NHS is as meaningful as a perfect attendance certificate.
Leave it off. Getting kicked off shows you in a negative light, not a positive one.
Agree with listing your project, omitting honor society. Keep doing community service.
Thanks for the help! I’m just starting to get really nervous about college apps!
S did something stupid and got an ISS but not one that qualified to be disclosed to colleges or go on his record but enough to keep him out of NHS per the school’s rules. He didn’t put it on his application and not a single college said a word about it. He was accepted at every college he applied to. Don’t sweat it.
