Getting someone to 'hold' a spot in a class for you

How does this work?

You’re friend signs up for the class*

After the time you are able to register, you coordinate it so that the second they drop it, you add it

Note: this doesn’t guarantee that you will get that class. If someone else jumps in after your friend has dropped it, but before you added it…you won’t be in the class.

*your friend must meet the eligibility requirements for the class (if there are any)

Isn’t there automatic waitlists also?

No, there are no automatic waitlists.

Some teachers may manually put you on their own waistlist if you email them, and if there are spots on the 1st day they might put you in (if you show up to class). However, most teachers that I have had do not.

Note that some departments do not allow this. The advisers can see the roster of people enrolled in the course, and a red flag will show up if someone who has taken the class before (and didn’t fail) is enrolled again. Unless they got a 2.4 or something and are trying to get a better GPA again, they’ll be dropped from the class. The advisers will contact them via email in case the “I want a better GPA” is the case though.

That being said, I’ve had people hold classes for me before (have always ended up not needing that hold anyway and then they ended up taking the class with me <3) and I’ve held classes for other students.

When transferring courses, I suggest that you both log into the same computer with very good internet speed (Ode is fine) using different browsers or one being incognito/private browsing and the other being “default” browsing. Set up both registration pages and then drop course from one page, add course from another. Almost flawless unless within that second, someone randomly tried to add the class.
