Hi, I am going to be a freshman in college soon, and the way my college works, is that we have registration the day before classes start. I obviously don't want to pay full price at the bookstore for books, but I don't have time to have books shipped before classes start. So how should I handle this with my professer? I am very nervous about starting college, so any other advice would be helpful as well. Thanks!

at the beginning of the semester there is probably an add/drop period where people switch in and out of classes.

It shouldn't be an issue at all. Professors know that some kids order their books online. That doesn't mean they won't assign things, but they know that some people will not be able to do them yet. Unless it's something you have to turn in, in which case you will need to borrow someone's book or something, but that is unlikely so early in the semester.

I know some people who ordered their textbooks online (at much cheaper rates than their school bookstore) as soon as they knew which classes they would be in. They would use books purchased at the bookstore while they waited until the online-purchased books would arrive in the mail, then they would return their bookstore purchases back to the bookstore (with receipt). They got their full amount paid returned. Online-purchased books take from about a week to two weeks to arrive, sometimes they arrive within a couple of days.

That's the way the college bookstore I'm familiar with operated. Other college bookstores might have different policies when it comes to returning books.

Good luck.

If the professor has been teaching this class for a few years, there is a good chance that the required textbooks are available in the library. Ask if he can place them on reserve, so people in your class in the same situation can stay up on assignments until your books arrived.

(This situation happened a lot because the theatre professors at my school were notoriously late in just ordering texts at the bookstore, forcing everyone to do the required reading for the first few weeks in the library. I know in one class, we started reserving a conference room and would take turns passing the books around and reading aloud.)

wow, you guys colleges libraries have the text books?

I am in the same situation.....and my college libraries don't have textbooks that I need.

Just tell the professor that you've ordered your textbook online and that it hasn't come in yet. Either he'll lend you a book or tell you which library it's available in. Also, a lot of ppl get the book from the bookstore, and then return it when their own book gets in. Usually you have to return the book within a week.

Im waiting until the second day of classes(tuesday) to get mine because on that day I will get my 10% employee discount. I just have to hope there are books left.
