Okay so I want to order books off of half.com but I don't know when the optimal time to order them will be. I am moving in on the 24th and classes start on the 27th. If I order them today, I don't want them to arrive when I am not there yet, because we are not allowed to have stuff sent before we move in. If I order then when i move in, there is no way they will arrive before classes start, so what should I do, any suggestions? Other than to order them from the bookstore, they are far to pricey.

Order them a few days before you move in and have them sent to your dorm. If you have them sent media male (the default option on half.com), it will take about 4-8 days to get there (depending on how far the shipment is coming from), or you could wait until you actually get there (or one day before) and order them priority (usually 2 days shipping), and you should be set. I don't think professors will care if you don't have your books on the first day of class, but maybe it's different for your school.

Oh, the only problem with all of this is that you never know when the people doing the actual selling will send it out. Sometimes it's the same day, other times it's four days after the order date, and that's before taking into account shipping times. I ordered three books on Tuesday, one was shipped yesterday (shipped, not arrived), one was shipped today, and the other one hasn't even shipped yet. So if I were you, I would order them now and have them sent to your dorm, 'cause it will take at least until the 24th to actually get there (if you use media mail).

do not order the books yet. wait until you've gone into the classes and make sure what books the professor wants. it can save you from buying the wrong book. schools tend to post the book the class will require on a bookstore website but that may not always be up to date. sometimes you might not even need the book right away or you can work something out with your roommate depending on what classes you both take. anyways, wait until the classes start. usually you get sometime to get the books anyways.

also a better site than half.com for textbooks is Compare Prices on New & Used Textbooks, Cheap Textbooks - GetTextbooks.com which acts as search engine to all sites selling textbooks. you can get cheaper prices than half.com sometimes.

thanx, lost of great info. Much appreciated!
