Getting There

Can someone help me with logistical planning? I'm trying to buy airplane tickets and the best flights are into Providence. Is it possible to fly into Providence and take a train or bus to the college? If so, how is this best accomplished?

PM WendyMouse, she should know how to get to Wellesley from RI. Are you concerned about the ticket price or the schedule? If the ticket price is your main concern, how big is the cost difference? If it is less than $30-50, I’d go with the flight that lands in BOS, since you’d probably spend $25-30 on bus or train fares. BTW, Southwest Airlines will fly into BOS stating August 16th. Check them out. You can bring 2 pieces of checked-in luggage at no extra charge.

There’s an amtrak train which goes from providence to either westwood (rte 128), back bay or south station for $12, but then you’d still have to get to campus somehow.

Here is Wellesley’s suggestion on how to get to the college from the Amtrak station:

If you’re going to have a lot of stuff with you, you might want to invest in a cab ride from the train station, but that would cost about $30 (from the Westwood station, which is closest to Wellesley)

Yes, I do know how to get from Wellesley from RI. I drive my car:

South Station does not connect to the TF Green Airport, which is not in Providence, despite what everyone from the airport on down tells you. There are busses from the airport to Providence, and busses/trains from Providence to Boston, and then further trains to Wellesley. Then you can walk half a mile from Wellesley Square. All I know who have done this note that the 50 mile trip now takes them 5 hours. An extension to the rail system has long been proposed but I’ve never heard of any progress.

The TF Green website has some info about getting a shuttle to Providence itself: [FAQs[/url] This seems to be the company website:

Transit to Providence would be $11. Transit to Boston would be $7.75-$11, and transit to Wellesley would be a further $5.25 at the mercy of the MBTA.

When you actually go to Wellesley and aren’t lugging enough to move in and out, you can experiment with other solutions involving the a combo of the Peter Pan bus line, the mbta and maybe a taxi. Most people who fly into Providence pay a student to drive them.

The Manchester, NH airport has free transportation to the orange line. If Logan is that bad I would look into Manchester before flying into Providence.
