Getting to Boston?

How easy is it to get to Boston from Brown? What are the options, the costs, and the time involved?

Thanks a lot

are you driving or taking public transportation ?
I have taken the MBTA train from providence to Boston ( south Station )
with approx 4 stops, it was about 45 minuntes. It was a few yrs ago, but I think it was about $12. You can probably check their website for details.

You can also take the Amtrak trains from Providence to Boston. A bit more expensive, but faster.

There are also some bus and limo services that go to the airports in the two cities, but when I looked into it, the MBTA was best if you don't need to involve the airport.

Where in Boston do you want to go? My son is a student at RISD (which shares College Hill with Brown) and he goes into Boston frequently for concerts and to visit friends at BC and MassArts. He takes the train.

I have a question. If you fly into Boston, how would you get from the airport to RISD/Brown? I've been flying my daughter to Providence but I might want to try Boston. It could be cheaper, but would it be safe? Any thoughts about this? I haven't done it myself.

What you might save in airfare you will likely spend in aggravation. I avoid Logan Airport in Boston at almost any cost; it is much easier and faster to fly into TF Green outside of Providence.

To get to the train via public transportation from Logan, one takes the Silver Line bus from the airport (which I believe you get either from the terminals or there is a shuttle to get you to the Silver Line stop) to South Station. From South Station, you get the train to Providence.

If you're not taking public transportation, any savings in airfare will be eaten up by cab fare or car rental fees.

It's not the transport to and from Logan that's the hassle, although coordinating schedules is an issue, as is traffic to and from Logan. It's Logan itself - I think it has one of the highest delayed flight records in the country.

I just checked the MBTA website. It is $7.75 one-way from Providence to Boston South Station. (Return trip is also $7.75) The Providence train station is an easy walk from Brown. The flight situation could be done easily if you do not have much luggage. It would be difficult and awkward to take suitcases on Boston's subways and also on the commuter rail.

i would not recommend schleping luggage up college hill at all! it's a $5 cab ride...

i'm actually considering doing the same thing concerning flights. i could get a direct flight out of portland instead of having to fly through minnesota or atlanta and then take the train. cheaper and i'd save like 3 hours.

how far is logan from south station?

Not very long at all. You just take the silver line, which I think is something like 10-15min depending on traffic, though I don't remember exactly because I was talking to someone at the time.

Thanks a lot for the help. My main concern was getting to South Station.

There is a direct Peter Pan Bonanza bus from Logan to Kenneddy Plaza, which is a few minutes away from college hill. A one way trip is $22 dollars but its convenient and saves a lot of hassle. Check out the peter ban website for schedules.

if you want to go to boston to have fun, i honestly dont think you'll go very often! thre's a lot of fun to be had here. :)

so easy to get there. trust me though ClaySoul is right lots of fun in RI- and yummy restaurants.
