I was wondering what are your methods of transportation for getting to Cal from the airport. Shuttle, train, etc?

I'm scared that I might get lost if I don't go directly from the airport to berkeley. I'm very bad at making my way around. So bad that one time I was lost in downtown for more than an hour, simply because I forgot where I parked my car...

From CalSo website:

From the Oakland International Airport

BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit): Take Air-BART (blue. purple, and orange) to the Coliseum BART Station (costs $3 for adults). Shuttles leave the terminal every 10 minutes. From the Coliseum Station, take a Richmond-bound train to the Downtown Berkeley Station ($2.20). Use the Shattuck/Addison West exit, and walk one block east up Center Street to campus. Plan on 30-60 minutes travel time. If you need additional information about BART travel from the airport, call 510/465-2278 (BART - Bay Area Rapid Transit).

Shuttle Services: See Shuttles below. Plan on 25 minutes travel time during the day and 45 minutes during commute hours.

Taxi: Take a cab to UC Berkeley campus. The fare from Oakland International to Berkeley is approximately $35-40.

Anyway, the first method seems like a good way to get lost for me, because I might take the wrong shuttle or something. Then, when I get off where i'm supposed to, I might not even know my way around to walk to berkeley @_@.

The taxi is expensive a bit expensive.

The shuttle seems like a good middle ground, but i'm not sure where it drops me off?

~_~ I need like step-by-step instructions because I am easily going to get lost.

take BART - it’s the transportation most students use. It’s the cheapest and prob gets you there in plenty of time.

Take airport shuttle to Coliseum/Oakland airport BART station (there will be ppl at the airport who can help u find the shuttle)

Buy a ticket from Coliseum to Downtown Berkeley (there will be a cost chart, you can ask someone to help you there).

Get on the BART that is the orange route on the BART map (i think its the fremont/richmond line)

get off at downtown berkeley, and its a few blocks up. there are maps on the berkeley website, and you can ask local ppl too

“Walk up university keep going east you’re there.”

Wait…You have to walk up to the university??? Isn’t that dangerous at night if you are a girl and you are walking all by your lonesome? Are there any security services? Like someone to walk with me from the stop?..I’m terrified of hobos and creepers… :s

Berkeley at night is safe. I’ve never actually walked up through the campus itself past 10pm, but I used to work at the 24 hr fitness on Addison, and would get off work around 12/1am. While there is a lot of homeless people there, they won’t bother you. It’s not like you’re going to get Law and Order SVU’ed.

BART is like a subway train, so you can bring as much luggage as you need. If you’re afraid you’re going to get lost, talk to a BART station agent. They’re usually locals who can give you directions.

When you get to Col BART go up to one of the ticket machines and put in the amount you’ll need to get from your station to Downtown Berkeley. Put your ticket in the gate that has a green arrow on it. Go down to the platform. One side of the platform is for trains headed towards San Francisco, and the other side is for trains heading towards Richmond.

Depending on what day you’re coming on, you may have to get on a Pittsburgh/Bay Point train and transfer at Mac Arthur Station. Otherwise that, just hop on a Richmond train. This train will take you straight to Downtown Berkeley (the stop AFTER Ashby Station). Pay attention to the signs at each station. If you get to North Berkeley, you’ve gone to far and need to get on a train going the opposite direction. The Downtown Berkeley sign just reads “Berkeley.”

When you get off of the train, head up the stairs to the level above the platform. There you’ll see a big escalator that will take you out to the corner of Center & Shattuck Ave. When you get off of the escalator, you’ll be in front of a Chase bank and a Tully’s coffee. Do like a 180 and start walking up the opposite direction of Chase on Center St. (towards Games of Berkeley). Walk up that street until you reach the stop light next to Starbucks. You’ll then be at one of the entrances to UC Berkeley. Idk where your housing unit is, so I can’t give you any more directions than that.

But another alternative is to catch a cab, which will be conveniently located to your right when you exit the escalator in the BART station.
