how long is the line to get a student id at freshman orientation on the first morning of orientation? the center opens at 8:30 and i was thinking of getting there around 7:30 or 7:45 to wait in line to make sure that i get it asap (because my mom has to wait with me because i'm underage)

for people who have already been, do you think there will be a long line when i go?

I can’t attest for freshman orientations, but I waited an hour and a half during the transfer orientation. I don’t know if it will be as bad for you since you guy should have multiple days to get an id.

First of all make sure you stand in the right line. You have to update the security of your eid first. Then go to the line where you take your picture. And yes get there EARLY so that you don’t have to stand in line for 3 hours like myself.

I went to the FAC to get my ID card on the first day of orientation around 9 and had to wait maybe 40 minutes overall. When you enter there will be a line for students under 18 and students that are at least 18. I’m 18 so I didn’t go through the same process that you will but that line seemed to move at a decent rate (30 minutes to get through?). After your mom signs whatever they need she should be done and you should be free to go to the line to get your picture taken (about 10-15 min). Students can get their ID over a large period so there wasn’t much of a rush when I was there.
Also, check-in didn’t start until 8 so most orientees will probably be in Jester. If the FAC is open and does let you get your ID, there probably won’t even be a line. And again, the lines weren’t really all too long so if your Mom is really in a rush to get to work or something, the people in line probably would let you cut if you ask.

Remember, this is mostly speculation from my experience at specific orientation at a specific time, so your best bet is to call them and ask to make sure.

EDIT: After reading Katatonic’s post, I’m feeling like my experience may have been abnormal. Just so you know, I arrived at check-in at 7:55, got to my room and unpacked a little then wandered around campus a little before deciding to get an ID. When I arrived around 9 the main line was about 45 people long but as Katatonic said, there’s another line that you’re supposed to be in first that’s past the glass doors/wall by the Computer Store. Even through some confusion and waiting in 2 wrong lines (I mistakenly got in the under 18 line because there wasn’t even a line for the over 18 crowd) I finished in around 40 minutes. So either I really did have a strange experience or everyone else got there late.

Well if I would have been in the right line it might have taken an hour. But i wasn’t! So it took 3. I probably went to get my ID around 10 so being there earlier as frever did sounds to be in your best interests.

Don’t bother going the first day or the morning of the second day. I walked by the first day and the line was ridiculously long. Then I went the second morning thinking I would be alone, but there was still a fairly long line but I waited it out anyway. Then I went with my roommate around noon that day and there was no line at all.

No need to be in a rush to get your ID, the only real use at orientation is to get in the gym.

I took my son to FAC to get his ID on Friday (he starts orientation tomorrow). There was no line at all! The person who helped us said he would get a better photo since there wasn’t a long line waiting behind him.

If you can go by FAC before orientation as Maine described I highly recommend it. I upgraded my eID weeks before orientation, and while I was there they asked if I wanted to get my physical ID - of course being a girl I wanted to have my hair straight and my make-up done so I declined, as I hadn’t been prepared for that option. While upgrading my eID beforehand saved me some time during orientation, I still had to stand in line for awhile to take my picture for the card, and then a bunch of the card printers went down, and it was a big old mess. In hindsight, I’d rather have had a crappy picture than to miss out on some of the things I had wanted to make it to during orientation, and since you can go ahead of time to upgrade everything and get your card, it seems the better option to me.

There are times that there are 200 students waiting in line. Then there are times when nobody is in line. Right after a large whole-orientation required meeting, RUN to the FAC (usually from that auditorium next door) and get your ID. No line! That’s what I did.

Whatever you do, don’t waste your time getting your ID at the beginning of orientation. Everyone wants one at the beginning, and the lines are ridiculous. I got mine on the 3rd day–sometime in the morning. There was literally nobody in line. It took about 2 minutes. There’s no need to get it early
