I applied to the UMN in the middle of October (had to retake ACT on sept. 21 ) and I still haven't heard back from them. I applied to CSE(biomedical engineering) as my first major and CBS(biochemistry) as my second major. Now I know that this may have been a mistake. I should have applied to CLA as my second. I am really worried that I wont get accepted to the U which is really killing me inside. Here are my stats:

A little Bio:
I am a African American male who lives in Minnesota. I attend an average school. I live in a single parent household in a family of 4(Me, brother, mom, and grandmother.) We do not get child support from our father. I do qualify for Free lunch at school. My brother has ADHD. I also might have it(although I am not sure of the symptoms) because lately I have a had a hard time concentrating on my school work. I had another brother who died of leukemia when I was around 5 or 6.(Recently, my moms bank account was emptied by the credit card company because she used that card a decade ago to pay for my brother who died's treatment)

So, is there any chance that I could still be accepted?

There is still plenty of time to receive an admissions date; their application deadline isn’t until the 16th anyway. Your ACT and GPA are on the lower side for CSE and CBS but your course load is relatively difficult. Did you submit any letters of rec or essays to help explain your situation? Or fill in the spot on the application where you can talk about special circumstances?

I’m assuming the university accepts the stronger applicants the earliest and will wait until the application deadline to make decisions on applicants that are on the edge. I am pretty sure that they accept people into CLA even when they don’t put it as a choice but their qualifications are good enough. (I definitely think you would get into CLA, and I still think you have a decent chance at CSE/CBS.)

If you didn’t indicate your situation in your application, I don’t think it’s too late to email someone from admissions requesting to add some information. Make sure you check your application tracker though, since they don’t email admissions decision and it can take several weeks after your tracker changes for a letter to come via snail mail.

Maybe see if your school counselor could write a letter to admissions or get in touch w/ admissions on your behalf - to check on status and also give them info re your background and some of the challenges you and your family have faced through your childhood. If you are first in your family to attend college, that would be good to mention too. No matter what happens, I believe every person will find his or her best fit if they strive to do so. You have overcome a lot of challenges already in your young life and that in itself will help you throughout your life. YOu already demonstrate a lot of resiliency. Best of luck to you. My money is on you doing well in life no matter which path you end up taking. Hang in there.

Why haven’t I gotten a decision yet? I applied around Dec. 10! This is pretty frustrating The app tracker still says the same thing it did when they received all of my materials:

“All of your required application materials have been received. Thank you! Students whose complete applications are submitted by the priority deadline will receive their decisions by the end of February. Students whose complete applications are submitted after the priority deadline are considered on a space-available basis beginning in March.”

Some people applied a lot earlier than you and still haven’t heard anything. Including me. I applied Mid october had all my materials in within a couple days and still nothing 3 months later. But they have a lot of people applying and need time to go through all of them. So all we can do is wait.

^I am in the same position as Jeana87. There are thousands of people just like us, still waiting. We have to be patient. And also, before people go posting this same complaint over and over, read some other threads. There are a bunch of other applicants complaining of the same thing. Sadly, there is nothing we can do. Hang in there, guys! Good luck!

Also, I wanted to mention that I am really concerned that I will be denied admission. I thought that I would be looked at in February and they are considering me in January. Does this mean that I have a higher chance of being denied admission?

I think any “…carefully being considered” is going to be an admission and less likely a waitlist if it changes to that before February. They usually deny and waitlist in February. My application changed to “…carefully being considered” same time as you roinujo. Best of luck

Roinujo1, yes, they do consider the sub scores. At least UMN does. However, they will only look at sub scores from one sitting, not multiple tests.

Congrats roinujo1 - You will love your UMN experience! If you are seriously thinking about transferring to CSE just make sure you take the appropriate courses freshman year so you will be able to transfer. (what major are you thinking about?)
