Are there a lot of ghetto kids attending Cal? I came from the ghetto and I hope that my kind are there. (I seriously want to know this, this isn't a joke. I don't know how to say "ghetto" other than "ghetto".) I currently go to a mid level UC and there are a lot of suburbanites here.

Yes there are, but of course there are many more kids from well-off families here. I see urban sort of people all the time though. I think it has to do with the fact that Berkeley is in an urban environment, so they feel at home here and aren't as pressured to conform to suburban culture as they would be at a place like Davis or Stanford.

I use to be from the ghetto, and i am hoping there arent a lot of ghetto kids @ berk!! LOL, well, that depends on the definition... like if you are saying gang bangers, then i hope not!!

***????? mojojojo are you on drugs???? ITS Cal for cryin' out loud!!!!! Do you think gang bangers have a 3.8+ GPA????

NOPE

I'm from the CPT, arguably the most dangerous city in the US!!! Those of us who are going to Cal are by no means involved in the crime scene here. Also, I have never in my life encountered a gangster who's super smart and is going to Cal.

And to calm you down a bit. They are all going to Cal States or nearby CCs so you can rest assured that there will be no straight up guetto people at Cal. They might act hard but thats only a facade to try and stay cool. That's all.

"And to calm you down a bit. They are all going to Cal States or nearby CCs so you can rest assured that there will be no straight up guetto people at Cal. They might act hard but thats only a facade to try and stay cool. That's all."

Don't charactorized students at CC's and Cal State's to be gang bangers and ghetto people... And don't put yourself above them just because you are going to be going to Cal...

Just wear this shirt and you'll be taking the ghetto force with you, no matter where you go, "yo yo gang-sta yo"

LMAO, at the above link. Pretty hilarious, dude.

"Don't charactorized students at CC's and Cal State's to be gang bangers and ghetto people... And don't put yourself above them just because you are going to be going to Cal..."

***??? Did you mean CATEGORIZE????? I really, really, REALLY don't understand your point. What I meant was that those in my school who are what you OUTSIDERS refer to as "guetto" simply have decided to attend the local CCs and CalStates because of OUR socioeconomic status and whatever. That's all. BTW, if I don't recall incorrectly, the OP wanted to know about "ghetto" people at Cal. All I said is that the "ghetto" people I know are going to other universities.

Also, I am not putting myself above and beyond them because I'll go to Cal. Hell, I didn't even want to go to Cal in the first place. My plans were to go to CalState Fullerton. The only reason why I'll go to Cal is because I have a free ride and Haas' reputation and recruitment. The campus to me is decrepitly old and badly maintained. I didn't expect this. But, Haas is what I'm looking at, not Sproul plaza.

BTW, and just so you know, from the CPT there were only about 12 students accepted to Cal from the whole city. 4 from my school.

"....charactorized...." WOW, LMAO XP!!!!!!!!!!!!

lol...i was only joking around, i know there wont be any gang bangers at berk...

assuming that we have a general consensus on the connotation of the word "ghetto," the answer to your question is yes. A fair warning, however: most people who conform to the "ghetto" lifestyle may not find themselves very popular in the social scene at berkeley. Truckloads of ipods disappear in berkeley annually, and most are either confirmed stolen by, or suspected stolen by, people who fit the "ghetto" description. Perhaps you can elaborate on what you mean by "ghetto," as everyone has their own ideas...

Let's just blame it on the homeless, LMAO.

BTW, there's a bunch of them at Cal, so be judicious of the word "ghetto" since homeless people live in the ghetto, therefore, Cal is ghetto

LMAO XP!!!!!!!!!

I'm being sarcastic, but honestly, I'll feel at home at Cal since there are so many bums there. LOL, just like the CPT.

I'm still kiddin' btw.

Yeah, sorry about that. "Ghetto" can be defined in many ways. People who didn't come from the suburbs. Who aren't "well-off", came from places that weren't too safe. Influenced by African-American culture and aren't fake. If they don't like you, they won't fake liking you. They aren't giddy and happy-go-lucky because that's not how life was. At the same time though, they aren't emo.

here, this is the mainstream definition of ghetto

ghetto 1827 up, 234 down

(n.) an impoverished, neglected, or otherwise disadvantaged residential area of a city, usually troubled by a disproportionately large amount of crime

(adj.) urban; of or relating to (inner) city life

(adj.) poor; of or relating to the poor life

(adj.) jury-rigged, improvised, or home-made (usually with extremely cheap or sub-standard components), yet still deserving of an odd sense of respect from ghetto dwellers and non-ghetto dwellers alike

DFDSLX0988: No, I meant charactorize. You should have gone to CSFU, it would have been a definite admit into Business instead of applying in 2 years for Haas and being one of the 50some% that get in...

DFDSLX0988: if you don't know already, it makes you look kind of dumb when you make fun of other people's improper spelling on the Internet.... it's the Internet for crying out loud.

Using your definition startraksfinest, I hope there are a lot of people like that at Cal. According to a press release, Cal accepted more people this year form the below $30,000 annual family income range so hopefully there will be more "real" people attending Berkeley in the Fall.

rgomez, yeah, I hope they are there too. Its funny that you mention the income thing, because there seems to be a strong correlation with "real" folks and low income.

i dont know about the people already there but

GO CRAZY 07 MOFUGGGASSSS

lol @ "real". This place could always stand to lose some self-aggrandizing pricks from either side of the income spectrum. Lose the holier-than-thou attitude.

Oh come on Tropical, you know there are fake people out there. You know, people who are so worried about how they look or how trendie they are or how many obscure indie bands they listen to or how much money they have. If you don't know, chances are you're one of them. I mean, I don't think I'm inherently better than them, it's just I would like to not have to deal with them.

No, that **** should have ended in middle school or early high school. If anything, your views are only reflective of your current habitat.

I agree with you Tropical, that kind of stuff should have ended in elementary, but that's not always how it is. Therefore there is such a thing as "real" and "fake" people. Maybe my attitude is just a byproduct of where I live. Anyway, do you go to Cal?
