GI Bug Help

Soaring Son and I are Spring Breaking down on South Padre Island. Last night he came down with some sort of intestinal bug. He tells me that several folks at USAFA had this last week. We are nursing it along with Gatoraide and Ibuprophen. Any hints from those who may have had this? How long can we expect it to last? Thanks!

Potter had this last week. Was put on bedrest for the week. Clinic had to fill the little girl with an IV. Rest, Motrin, and fluids. Good luck.

Thanks. Well, we can't say we had a "wild time" here at SPI!

Soaring dad,

"Clear" fluids and rest. That's the best home treatment you can do. If you feel he's seriously dehydrated, then take him to an urgent care.

Sorry your break isn't what you hoped it would be, but I'm guessing he'd rather be with family when he's sick :)

Oh ---- Soaring dad,

WASH YOUR HANDS!!!! You don't want to be next! :)

Son got “it” TWICE this winter.

1st time, he was put on IVS for a few hours, then sent back to resume school, etc. He felt weak for about 4 days.

Second time (more than a month later,) they put him on IVs plus antibiotics, then was quaranteened to his room for 48 hours (to help prevent spreading.) This was 2 weeks BEFORE Recognition!

Interesting enough, his 2 roommates have never gotten it, but son has indicated that lots of others have lived thru it as well this winter.

Both times - doctors have believed it is a VIRUS, so Gatorade and rest is the best option at this point.

Good luck.

Think twice about ibuprophen - it can rip up ones gut.
IF he is throwing up nothing by mouth for an hour after then small sips of clear fluids

Clear fluids = ginger ale, gatorade, flat coke etc. No juice. then go to BRAT diet - Banana’s, rice, applesauce and toast. these are all “binding”.

have him check his urine output. it should be light not dark and at least 3x in 24 hrs. If his urine is dark and strong he needs to increase liquids. if less than 3x in 24 hrs he needs the ER.
Good luck.

Thanks for the help. Just returned from SPI. He is recovering nicely, but I caught it last night. However, I have been aggressively pushing fluids and seem to be (so far) not quite as bad off as he was. Oh yes, I was washing my hands quite often!!

Man that was a NASTY bug, I was lucky not to get it! I was very happy I took some acidophilus pills with me to Mexico, I’m convinced they kept Montezuma away!
