Ever since I joined this site, or at least came back to it, I was contemplating giving up on sports and focusing on school, studying and EC's when I could find them. Is this a good idea if I'm looking to go to a great college? I don't want to stay in-state unless I for sure know I'm going to UNC Chapel Hill, and I'd like to go to a good college or university regardless. Has anyone stopped playing sports for school to attempt to get ahead? Please let me know as it will help me make my decision.

If you want to look at everything from a “getting ahead” POV, sports are a great EC. Don’t stop doing them if you love them.

If you don’t like them though, quit, concentrate on your studies, and get heavily involved in ECs that are somewhat less time consuming.

I like it a lot, I just don’t know if I’ll be able to completely focus on my grades as well as the sport, and I’d rather get a B+ than a C+ in a subject I know I’m not too good at.

If you want to go to a “top” school, you need to be able to learn to juggle things. If you cannot juggle, you may want to rethink going to a tip-top school.

Best of luck. Follow your passions, not what you think an adcom wants to see.

Thanks. :]
