Giving a letter for a recommendation letter?

I spoke with one of my teachers earlier today about getting a college recommendation. He said he'd be happy to do so and told me to come talk to later to set it up. He also asked me to write down some of my ECs on a piece of paper and give him the forms.
I plan on meeting with him again to discuss and give him my forms but my mom suggests I give him a short letter along with the forms, explaining why I'm asking him for a rec, the colleges I'm applying to and my proposed major, and something stating my ECs. Is this even necessary or just weird?
I guess writing a short letter explaining these things would be a bit more professional and would show how serious I am about getting a rec from him in a timely manner. But at the same time I feel like I could just explain these things to him face to face.
Any suggestions?

I would write the short letter.

Maybe not the “dear mr. blah blah” but starting out with something like “thank you for writing this letter” and then telling him some extra information about yourself.

Just tell the teacher that you wrote down some extra stuff that you wanted to tell him about so he wouldn’t have to remember it off the top of his head.

It can only help, and when he notices that you’re prepared, your letter will be even more positive than it would have been in the first place.
