Giving myself the best chances..

Hello. I just started school about two weeks ago at a local community college. I live in southwestern Illinois. I am taking classes towards a two yr. degree in Electrical Engineering. I've looked at places I'd like to go after Im done here. I think I'd like to transfer to UIUC in two years. It's obviously the top school in Illinois in that subject area.
I'd like to know what I can do to prepare. What extracurriculars should I participate in now? Where is a great place to work part time to develop some sort of background? How would I even begin towards this goal? I hope it is not too late since I am out of high school and everything. Any other advice would really be appreciated.

Have you gone here:
http://www.oar.uiuc.edu/future/faq/transfer.html

I would definitly meet with an advisor at your current school to determine transferable classes and get more input.

In addition to good grades I would get involved in other things as much as I could w/o sacrificing my gpa. Look into IEEE or campus clubs or get a part time job that could utilize your education (if possible). Also, in addition to an advisor, find a professor who could help you as a mentor and as a possible letter of recommendation.

Additional advice; don't limit you selection when you transfer. Play the field and apply to other places, even if you don't think you'll get in. When I applied to college I was surprised at who selected me and who didn't.

Good Luck

Most important for transfer application to UIUC is to have completed (with fairly high grades) required courses for transfer into engineering. You can start here to see what is required (and then start searching for departmental requirements): http://www.engr.uiuc.edu/students/prospective/transfer_admission.php

Thanks guys.
