Global Liberal Studies

Anyone taken this before? how much flexibility do you have for choosing courses freshman year? i heard for the first year you really don’t have much choice and have to take the 4 required courses…

I’m in the Liberal Studies Core Program, but the two are similar for the first year. Freshman year, you have to take three required courses each semester: Cultural Foundations I/II, Social Foundations I/II, and Writing I/II. Your fourth class each semester is chosen by you, although there are some restrictions on what courses you can take. Every program/school at NYU has required classes/gen-eds that freshmen have to take, so it’s not like LS students are alone in it. Check out the [2015 GLS Registration Handbook](Arts & Science) for more information.

My D was accepted and they want her to spend her first two years in Florence. While Florence is excellent, I’ve read about problems with teaching staff in Paris and understand that none of the overseas faculty are permanent, i.e. they are all adjunct faculty. Is this an issue? And is there any chance she can apply to transfer to NYC for her sophomore year instead?

I have never heard of someone being required to go for two years. Do you mean two semesters i.e. the first year? This is more common. I spent my first year in Florence and thought it was AMAZING. While yes the faculty are not full-time faculty or “NYU faculty” this is more country/legal based I was told.

Really this was amazing because it allowed NYU to hire local faculty (same qualifications) who are actually natives of the country. I was able to learn Italian from an Italian. Learn about renaissance art from an art historian who has lived and studied in Italy for his whole life.

Again, I would ask admissions or the LS advising office about the two year thing, because I think that is an error and have never heard of that.
