Global Studies at UCLA

Is it possible to get a major in global studies and minor in accounting, or it's impossible? How hard is it for freshman and transfer students to get into global studies? why does it seem that it's not a popular major on this forum but yet it's so competitive at the school? I hear about all other majors, history, political science, and anthropology and yet I hear rumors that GS is hard to get in? I don't seem to understand maybe someone can explain. good luck to everyone on everything.

helo everyone?

Yes it's possible to major in GS and minor in Accounting. I don't know much about GS but I do know that you are required to write a senior thesis, which is not required for most other majors. Hope that helps.

From what I hear, one of the easiest majors at UCLA. Go ask around to confirm that. I know someone who wrote 1800 words out of required 3000 word essay and got a B+ or A-. Unbelievable ...

I'm planning on majoring in Global Studies and minoring in accounting and I don't think it's impossible. I can't say how hard or easy the GS major is since I'm only a freshman and I haven't completed the prerequisites yet.

The GPA requirement to enter the major is at least a 3.25. Maybe people say it's hard because there are a lot of prereqs--7 courses (which are all pretty diverse), not including the 6 levels of foreign language you have to fulfill.

The senior thesis is supposed to be 35-50 pages long so I wouldn't say GS is exactly a breeze.

Workload-wise, its probably not a breeze. Grade wise, it doesn't seem too bad. My friend is an international student with grammar issues and she can still manage to get A-/As.

If you are minoring in accounting for job prospects, it may help to know that you don't need to actually get the minor to get a job in accounting. Firms care more that you will be CPA ready by graduation rather than having the minor. In any case, if you can't get into the minor, you can still take the courses.

thanks for the help guys. I am concerned because not a lot of people talk about the major, since its fairly new. like I ve been hearing all this thing that getting to the preglobal studies as a transfer student and freshman is very competitive, I hope I can get in soon.

global studies is far from being one of the easiest majors at UCLA.
-you have to apply to get in and have a minimum GPA of 3.5 (like comm)
-you have to finish 2 years of a foreign language
-you are required to spend a summer learning and doing research abroad
-you do a senior thesis over the course of your last year in college.
-the readings at the upper division level are challenging...but interesting!

compared to an engineering major, no, you won't have as much work. but compared with the rest of the social sciences, it's a pretty challenging major. not everyone is accepted even if they meet the minimum requirements.

that being said, it's a really interesting major! you are able to take courses in many different disciplines (it's interdepartmental) and see all of the different aspects of what you're learning in the core classes. It's extremely applicable for anyone looking into government, politics, nonprofit, econ, business, etc. as a career, since the trend these days is no longer domestic but global. The professors in the core classes are pretty awesome...plus, you can present your thesis to graduate schools as a writing sample, and your faculty mentor can write a bomb letter of recommendation.

PM me if you have more questions. :)

yeah what else does everyone think?

samantha444 is correct. I'm a Global Studies major, so I can definitely help you out if you have any questions! :)

agree with Samantha. Challenging, but rewarding if that's your thing. Good luck!
