Glynn Family Honors Program

Hey Everyone,

I just received my acceptance letter from Notre Dame in the mail the other day and I'm beside myself with joy! I am definitely going to attend (if everything works out financilly), and I was named a Notre Dame Scholar. I was just wondering about the Honors Program at Notre Dame and what you guys think my chances of getting into it are. I know they only accept about 100 students from each incoming class, but tell me what you think...

SAT I: Math-800, Critical Reading-740, Writing-800, Total-2340
GPA: Unweighted-4.0, Weighted-4.7
Class Rank: 3/170
Essays: I was pretty happy with my application essay, but I think you have to write an additional one for the Honors Program, too, right?

Thanks for your input!

Any takers? I think there may have been a previous thread on this, but is it really worth it to do the Honors Program if you can get in? I have heard that it can be rather detrimental to your GPA...

just chill... its only been 2 hours.....

trust me there are some very knowledgeable people that will come and help you.... no doubt

I just know nothing about the honors program... so I cant help you there... sorry

With those stats and being named a Notre Dame scholar, I think you will almost certainly be invited to apply and be accepted to the Honors Program. I am in it and your stats are better than mine, so I would assume you'd be in for sure. The essay for the HP application is basically just a short statement about why you would like to be in the Honors Program, so don't worry about it. If you do get invited/accepted, make sure its something you really want to do before you commit. As I said, I am in the HP now, and I think I'll end up sticking with it, but if I had to do it over again, I'm not sure that I'd do it.

Shellzie, son was invited to apply to honors program as well. But, because he is an engineering intent, he was a little nervous about doing it. Nearly everyone he ran into told him how hard the engineering program is at ND, and based on another thread and son's info, a lot of people are dropping out just after fall semester. We allowed him to make the call and he opted not to do it--just not a risk taker. We talked to someone in Engineering dept. during orientation and she was disappointed he did not apply, but understood saying most true engineers are not risk takers! I hope he has done the right thing--he took 17 hours this past semester and I know he worked very hard! Cannot speak about other honors programs, but my advice to new students is to ask as many questions as possible about it. Son did not receive any real positive feedback about honors program other than how hard engineering is. We are proud he is sticking with engineering but I would encourage others to seek out the feedback from as many people as possible (students, faculty, etc.)

thanks for the help everyone

Yeah, a lot of people seem to be dropping out now. I guess I figure by the end of this year, we will have most of the HP requirements completed anyway, so I may as well stick with it. Since I am a science major, it didn't really add any really hard, GPA-killing classes to my load, but it does create some scheduling conflicts that it might be better to avoid (since a lot of the classes are only offered during one time slot). As I've said in other threads, I hated my Hon. Philo Seminar (but I probably would have hated any philo class). However, I absolutely love my Honors Humananities Seminar and it isn't much of a time commitment (a lot of reading, but only 3 essays and 1 presentation). If you aren't planning in majoring in a science, be advised that the honors Chemistry and Biology are difficult classes, so if you aren't a science person, it might be hard to do well. The math requirement can also be a killer. I took calc III (which I was intending to do anyway- don't ask me why) and that was not an easy class. If I wasn't in the honors program, it would have been very easy to just drop out and use my two AP calc credits to get me out of the math requirement. I think the honors program makes more sense if you don't have the AP credit to get you out of the basic requirement classes (like FYC) or if all the HP classes are ones you really want to take. Otherwise, it might be better to opt out and leave room for electives that interest you. After one semester, my GPA is fine, but, with a biochemistry/Chinese double major and the Honors Program, I don't have any room for electives.

Just wondering, but can students not in the Honors Program take Honors classes?

I know that the "honors" science classes are also required for science majors and are open to anyone. And I think the other honors classes are open to anyone as well, but I'm not entirely sure.
