The other day I received a letter inviting me to apply for the Honors Program. Does anyone know how many people they invite / how likely it is to be accepted into the program? Also, does anyone know if the program is super difficult? Thanks.

If they invite you and you apply, I'm pretty sure you'll get in. It's mostly based off of your GPA and test scores and they won't invite you if you don't already have those. I actually don't know how many ppl are in the program, but check out their website- there's a list on there somewhere.

Also, its not really difficult. If you are a&l, you will take real sciences instead of the easy ones they design for arts and letters students. And you will have to take honors philo/theo which are tougher than the regular ones. My honors humanities seminar was really easy. And, if you are planning on taking calc 1 or 2 they make you take honors math, which sounds like it sucks. But I don't know first hand, since I was placed into calc 3, so i was able to just take regular calc 3 (engineering math track). They will also make you take 2 math classes even if you have enough AP credits to escape the university requirement, etc. You can pretty much do what you want though, since they dont keep that close track over what you've taken/haven't taken. The classes aren't really that bad though. And then you do a thesis your senior year, which will vary depending on what your intended major is.

in your opinion, does being in the honors program detract from the "normal" experience at ND? does it require a huge time commitment?

Lol, not at all. You just take different classes for your university requirements. I don't think they're really that much harder anyway. Then you have to do a thesis senior year, but a lot of other people do those anyway. Of course, most of my time commitment from schoolwork comes from being a biochem major. And even then, I'm still having a pretty normal experience here.
