Glynn Honors/Reilly Weekend Invites

Just wondering if anyone received notification of either with their REA acceptance package? My son has high GPA, 35 ACT, etc. and was hoping to be invited. Previous year threads seem to indicate that the invite was included with admission letters. Thanks!

@MagnoliaMom, my son also has strong stats (36 ACT, decent GPA but not off the charts) but we have not gotten an invitation. I would be curious as to whether these go out later in the year or if the invites have already gone out and we were not selected. Does anyone know how many are typically invited and when the invites go out?

For Glynn, I believe the invitation to apply for it comes out in February. Here’s a link to a thread on it from last year with additional info: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/university-notre-dame/2056327-glynn-honors-program-p1.html

One of my Ds is in the program, but I would not worry about it if an invite is not issued. It’s not a huge deal as far as I can tell.

Hi Everyone. My son contacted his admissions rep for another reason, and while he was at it, he asked about Reilly. Those invites have not yet been sent. The rep did not indicate when they would go out, however. Hope this helps.

@WineLover Thanks for the info!
@suzy100 You mentioned your daughter is in the program. Can you provide a few details? I see that there are special events for the scholars (e.g. winter dance, trips to performances, etc.). Do most scholars attend? Has your daughter found a good academic and social group of friends through the program or does she spend more time with friends from her residence hall or clubs? What would you say is the greatest benefit of the program and how did you/your daughter’s expectations match up with reality? Thanks!

Well, unfortunately I don’t have a lot of info, @MagnoliaMom. I’m out of town but I’ll ask her more about it when I get home. She has attended some events but not all. I know she took a trip to Chicago in the fall, but not sure if that was for Glynn or one of her other classes. She spends more time with friends from her dorm. She is a science major and the majority of them are too. They all have pretty rigorous schedules (18 hours!) and take the academics seriously. This is not to say they don’t do their fair share of partying, because they do. But they work hard. With football season over, she may take more time to do the social events with Glynn.

Glynn has a lounge - I think in the student center - that I know she goes to between classes. Free coffee and bagels! She had at least 2 Glynn classes last semester: a humanities seminar and honors philosophy. She did say both of those were challenging but interesting.

My older D had the exact same stats and was not invited and has had a truly fabulous experience at ND. She is writing a thesis so that piece is not confined to kids in the Glynn program. She also has very solid relationships with a number of professors and the head of her department, and is doing research for one. I have no idea why younger D was invited to apply but I don’t think it’s just based on stats. Honestly, I don’t think Glynn is that big of a deal except for the guaranteed summer research grant, and I think kids outside of Glynn can do that as well.

Hope this helps. If I learn anything more, I’ll post.

Other than the First-Year Glynn Family Honors Program invitation, you might want to encourage your student to have a serious look at the Sorins Scholar program at Notre Dame, which is just excellent:

Admission to the scholarship program is based on a competitive application process towards the end of the First-Year of studies at Notre Dame. Information on the application and other aspects of the program are included here:

I believe invites for both of these things come later in the winter/early spring. I was disappointed I wasn’t invited to apply for Glynn, but in hindsight, I am glad I am not in it. I know several people in the program, and from what I can tell, the classes are quite challenging. I actually know someone who dropped out of it. I would not have been able to take the (really cool) first semester classes that I did if I was in Glynn, and I have no lingering disappointment. Glynn does have its perks, and I know that my friends who are in it have become close with other Glynn kids. That doesn’t mean, though, that there aren’t other opportunities to write a thesis, take seminar classes, etc. Overall, not a bad opportunity, but I wouldn’t say there’s a need to be disappointed if you’re not invited to apply.

My son received an invite to apply to Glynn Saturday, 1/26.

Good morning all. My son said that some of the admitted students in his group chat have received Reilly invites. My son did not receive one. However, he did receive a merit invite and a Glynn invite. Some students who did not receive merit invite got Reilly invite and vice versa. So there is no rhyme or reason to who gets the Reilly invite. My hunch is that admissions is pretty sure my son will enroll based on his communications with the rep where he indicated ND was his first choice. I imagine those who get the Reilly invites are those who they are trying to entice. Correct me if I am wrong!

S with high stats got Reilly invite but nothing about merit. We live about 700 miles away and haven’t visited yet - were waiting until we heard about scholarships/financial aid because he can’t attend unless it’s affordable. I’m glad he gets to go to the Reilly weekend and am hoping the financial aid will work out. Based on several factors it’s his top choice at the moment, even sight unseen. And if undergrad doesn’t work out he can use the visit for making decisions about eventual grad school.

Our daughter received the merit and Glynn invites but not Reilly.

@WineLover where did your son find the admitted students group chat?

Just checking back in to report that my S did receive the merit and Glynn invites! Yay! His mentioned the $25,000 per year one but no other specifics. I looked through the list of all the merit possibilities and I think there are a few that fit that amount.

Does anyone know how many semifinalists were selected?

He is trying to work on his video and essays today - it has been a busy week at school so he’s just getting around to them now. He’s kind of stuck for ideas of how to present himself in the video. He found some online from previous years and they are all very different in terms of tone and content.

He took the Glynn video interview last night and it did not do so well he thinks. He is not fast on his feet when presented with random topic questions. Do you know if he isn’t offered any merit scholarship if the Glynn honors option is given as a sort of consolation prize? Or is there a chance he might not receive any money or honors program after all this extra work? I haven’t seen anyone receive only a Glynn honors invite without a merit invite as well.

My D was invited to Glynn but not offered a scholarship, @MagnoliaMom. We were not full pay. Any scholarship would just have been replaced with or supplemented by financial aid so I’m wondering if those scholarships are mostly for full pay families? Well, unless they come with other perks.

@ndprobs he got to it through the Notre Dame Class of 2023 Facebook page. Just have go on Facebook and search Notre Dame Class of 2023, and have him join the group. The kids, I believe, are chatting on a separate group me app.

@WineLover Is that Notre Dame page a closed group? I see a couple of different ones.

@Tea4Two Yes, it is a closed group that your daughter must join. There is only one Class of 2023 ND group on FB. There is also a Class of 2023 ND parents group which you can join if you wish!

Where can I find some sample questions for the Glynn Honors? What were last year’s questions?

Re: Glynn Honors questions - my son said that there were several sample questions before he took the real questions. He registered then clicked on the link to get the sample ones. Hope that helps!
