GMS's SAT Question/Answer/Discussion Thread

Please ask Writing, Grammer, Math, Reading and ACT Science related subjects here, it would be a great oppertunity for us to learn together

Hey guys, this thread will pretty much a place where I will ask questions about things I am confused about when I am preparing for the SAT writing portion of the SAT. The content will range from understanding of certain literary terms to examples for certain rules. I want this to be more than just about me, I also want you people to also post stuff about your sucess stories and how you prepared for it. Any tip to the general public would be very helpful. I am taking the SAT on March, 10, 2012. I have been studying very hard for this soo far.

My Typical Scedule(Weekdays)(On weekends the number of hours are significantly greater).
One hour of Vocabulary
Three hours of SAT Grammer(Currently using Silverturtles Guide)
1 Hour of Math(Dr. Chung SAT Question)

My Belief: I know just by past experience that when I work hard and focus, with a lot of dedication and sincerity I am able to reach my goals.

Goal: My Goal is too go from a 1550(This is me without any studying except for Vocabulary) to a 2300+. For many this may seem unrealistic, but to me a palpable goal which I know I WILL be able to obain with a lot of dedication and hard work, which I am applying.

Currently to improve by Reading Skills: I read New York TImes, and am reading a book called Tess Of The D'urbervilles

Clases in Highschool as a Junior:
AP Calculus AB
AP CA III
AP Biology
AP US History
AVID

I am also planning on taking the ACT, this year as well and I beleive that my prepaeration for the SAT will supplment my ACT test taking in the upcoming months.

What I want from you guys:
I want you guys to ask questions on here ranging from any subject on the SAT or ACT, I would be very grateful to share my knowledge to others and try to help you guys out. When I help others out that how I learn the best.

So please give me your unconditional support and your tips and ideas for ways I can better improve my self.

Daily Content: I will also be posting the SAT Question Of the Day, so if anyone has any questions why a specfic choice is an answer we are able to answer and collaborate it. I will also have a Word of the Day.

Thank You! Please Give Me Unconditional Support.

I <3’d that book :).

I was wondering when there is an error with an appositive. It came up today and needed some clarification. Thank You.

You’re setting unrealistic goals for yourself. It’s only a matter of time before your motivation dies, and you’re overcome with frustration.

Also, there are several threads as this one, just scroll down the first page of this section.

Fat_Nerd well that is most likely from your past experience or from beliefs.

“Ability is what you’re capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.”

Getting a good score is my passion, my dream, and my future and am and will work very hard. I wont let anything stop me, I study nine hours a day.

I also need help understanding Case Errors with Prepositional phrases. I know that when the noun is teh object of a prepositional phrase, so it has to be in the objective case. Which means it is the object of the word. But I don’t get these examples. Any help?

I went to the well with she and Bob. (She should be replaced with her.)(I can see how you get that because if you say "I went to the well with she; that sounds grammatically incorrect.) Is sounding out a good way or it their an easier way.

The second example is Between you and I, I never really liked my enemies. I needs to changed to me, I do not know why.

I would also like to know when would you consider the prepositional phrase in order to determine the singular or plural verb.

You might want to check out the ACT since it seems like you’ve done well in school. If you do well in the ACT, you won’t have to study for the SAT or even take it if the scores are okay.

Example 1: Use “her” because that is the object pronoun rather than “she” which is the subject pronoun.
Example 2: Should be “Between you and me,” because it is a prepositional phrase (object rather than subject). In-depth Explanation here: [Grammar Girl : Between You and Me :: Quick and Dirty Tips](http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/between-you-and-me.aspx)

Also, studying 9 hours a day will probably burn you out and cause your other academics and ECs/social life to suffer, which will hurt your application too. Going from a 1500 to 2300 in a month will be very hard, and it is possible but don’t get crazy over it.

Thanks.

Can you guys please set up a rigorous schedule for which I can really challenge and improve my self?

Plus will I need to know about indicative mood, imperative mood or subjunctive mood? I need a response from someone who did really well on this portion of the SAT.

I got a 780 CR and 750 writing (got an 8 on the essay but 79 MC subscore). You may see sentences in all three of those moods, but you don’t need to be able to even identify them. I could just “tell” which ones were grammatically correct pretty much all the time, but if you can’t than specific grammar review is a good idea. Do lots of those questions with explanations and read grammar rules in general. I got a 600 something on writing on the PSAT, and relearning grammar got my MC to that 79.

How are you able to see which one is right and which is wrong. Please provide your study habits for it. Thanks

Anyone know any tips on how to study smartly?

If you have done enough high-level reading, you can recognize which sentences “sound” right because you will have seen many complex and varied sentences in quality newspapers and books. But even this might not work for “popular mistakes” which are grammatically wrong but colloquially permissible, so you should really just learn the grammar rules for SAT and do TONS of MC questions.

Can someone please explain to me what participles are and what there functionality are as well?

Guys what do you think of The Blue Book of Grammer to help bolster my score for my CW?

Guys how do I do expected value problems and Sequences and Series? How do you target those math problems like how you fo them?

Plus I also need help understanding Permuation, Combination, Probability SAT Mathproblems. Can someone find some and explain to me how to do it?
