My kid just got an email from GMU offering “Common App Direct Admissions.” I have never heard of this but it seems pretty awesome. (I got a cc email)
He is waiting to hear from BU, BC, UF, and some other Virginia state schools, but I told him this is great to have in his back pocket. The deadline is May 1 so he can see what the other schools say before having to act on this.
He is interested in cybersecurity. GMU offers degrees in CS and CIS.
Anyone else get this email?
We are in the different state, but my D22 got the email with direct admit to another university, in our state, (which was way below her stats) so we are not planning on taking that offer. Plus she wants to go out of state. Interesting enough she is going for Cybersecurity She is hoping for Purdue offer.
I have never heard about this program before, so seems a little strange how they select and assign seats.
P.S. I thought GMU offers cybersecurity degree as well…
Good luck with Purdue!
I did a little sleuthing. Common App started the Direct Admissions program as a very small pilot program last year with three HBCUs in VA, MD, and TN. So I guess the program has expanded a bit this year. Still, it seems to be completely under the radar. Would love to know what other schools are participating this year.
I came on CC tonight to check if there was any info about this. We’re in TN, and DD got this offer of Direct Admission through the Common App for MTSU. It’s a really good option with a lot of good programs.
She’s applied to 15 schools (all but one out of state) and has been accepted at Belmont U (where my husband teaches). Almost all of her schools are Uber-competitive and I’ve been worried that she didn’t have another safety (and may not actually want to go to school where her father is on faculty). So the offer of admission to MTSU was a pleasant surprise. I don’t imagine she’ll end up there, but she is going to respond to the email and see what kind of scholarship and aid package she gets.
Fascinating recruitment strategy I think!

congrats! I seem to think that at least one kid from my kids’ HS is now attending MTSU – here in VA you can get in-state tuition at an out-of-state school that offers a major not available at any VA school. Another local kid is at East Carolina for the same reason.
Yeah, the three out-of-state school my son has applied to have gotten much more competitive since I was a kid (BU in particular). He should get into some other VA schools but it’s great that he has GMU (a really good, up and coming school) in his pocket.
