GMU OR JMU

So I have a 2.7 yes I know that's low however I had a very rough freshmen year screwed my gpa and my life up however it's I brought my grades up an will end up graduating with around - 3.3 however my gpa to apply to college is 2.7 is there any chance I would get into GMU OR JMU? :( as a theatre major ? Please help me thank you

Seems difficult. Have you spoken to your guidance counsellor about it? They have data on how students at your school do.

There are some U’s that don’t consider freshman grades, but I don’t know about these. Did you read all the admissions pages for each? What about SAT M and CR or ACT? Do you have any special talent or accomplishment in theater?

JMU all students graduated in top 50% of the class. 60% admission rate. GPA and SAT are marked very important.

GMU almost all students graduated in top 50% of the class. Only 1% had your gpa range (up to 3.0) 8% had 3.0 - 3.24, 22% had 3.25 - 3.49 all the rest had higher gpa. 60% admission rate. GPA marked Very Important, SAT and class rank marked important.

I’m taking my and sat next month also I’m second in the state for competition acting. I’m going to talk to my school to see if I can take 2 or maybe one class that will avenger my gpa out to maybe a 2.8 or a 2.9 . This is just really upsetting because going there would be a dream come true :frowning:

Are you IS or OOS?

PM me about JMU with specifc questions. I teach there in Theatre.

I am in state

You should apply. Work up a good essay. Prep well for the sat. Maybe if you don’t make it you can transfer in after doing well in college. Good luck.

Both JMU and GMU really pay attention to GPA. Do everything you can to bring your grades up. As they stand, your grades are a real problem for admission. If you really want one of these schools, you may have to consider community college or another instate college with easier admissions and resolve to do very well so you can transfer. Both JMU and GMU have become more popular and harder to get into in recent years. Since you have awards in theatre, that may be your way in to JMU but not sure how much that would outweigh your GPA. KatMT should have insight into that and she has offered to have you PM her so I would take her up on that. Good luck!

You have excellent chances! JMU is your best shot, I suggest applying ED.

“You have excellent chances.” What are you basing that on? JMU has EA. My younger kid had 1350 + SAT’s, 3.6+ GPA and excellent EC’s and was initially accepted by GMU and waitlisted by JMU (he ended up also getting waitlisted by VT but got off both waitlists). JMU is not a slam dunk these days, particularly with the kind of GPA the OP is talking about.

No ED only EA with JMU. OP is likely not competitive EA. Needs time to demonstrate upward trend academically. JMU admitted student GPA is approx. 3.8. Artistic admissions recommendation for the major can help boost an academically viable candidate, but not all candidates. Feel free to message me. :)

Thank you all so much! I am still really worried but I’m going to try my hardest because maybe jmu or GMU will me a chance, and I have a good amount of things I’ve done like I’m a varsity cheerleader, forensics team captain, I also am a drama leader at my church for the youth and I teach and create plays. I’ve also have had a good amount of experience in performing on camera and on stage. I’m just going to work hard on my audition and prep for my SAT, and ACT wish me luck ! also hopefully this upcoming school year i won’t be second in the state I’m pushing for 1st

See you at audition in January/ February. Please let me know if you have any more questions.

Good luck!

Also remember that VA community colleges have guaranteed admissions programs with both GMU and JMU (as well as other in-state schools). You need to get a good GPA at CC to make that work. Look on your local CC website to get the details - but it’s a great way to get that GMU/JMU diploma if you don’t have grades, or finances, to be admitted right out of high school. Good luck! They are both very good schools.

unless KatMT likes your acting, you’re going to cc. KatMT has to be concerned, if you get in, about whether you would be able to survive the coursework there. Going to a cc is not the end of the world; most college students start out there.

I honestly have strong faith in myself that I can do anything I set my mind out to do, I’m not going to let my freshman year grades mess up my chances of achieving my dreams. Because colleges will also look at my grades thru year which are drastically way better. Community or jmu I’m going to work hard no matter what happens, because theatre is something that honestly has brought me thru a lot , and I can only go up from here.

Mokum18 -

You need 15 (I think) posts to be able to send a PM, so take a look at other places here where you can run up your post count, then you will be able to PM KatMT about the specific situation at JMU. She really is the one here at CC who is best able to counsel you about your options in VA.

Where are you located in VA? If you can commute to NOVA, you might be able to commute to the Summer Dinner Theatre program at Montgomery College-Rockville next year. http://cms.montgomerycollege.edu/edu/department2.aspx?id=5103</a> Think about that.

Wishing you all the best!

we’re not arguing about your dreams, OP. we’re talking about how you might get to them. strong faith is of no use when the mind refuses to see reality.

Mokum18 did just say “community or JMU I’m going to work hard no matter what happens” so I think she is seeing reality. Good luck!

non sequitur.
