Before the acceptance deadline of May 1st is near, as a current black student on campus, felt the need to give a warning and reminder that Scripps College is not built around the needs of students of color. Just recently a black student committed suicide on campus. Look into other schools as well before you make your decision. This school lacks diversity and support.
I was asked to expand on the topic. I will post the response I sent below:
You can get the statistics for the schools here : http://www.scrippscollege.edu/assessir/cds page 3 lists race. Right now it currently states that currently 42/ 1037 students are black. That’s 4% and no where close to the percentage of african americans within the population. No issue is entirely scripps related as the consortium functions as one. You take classes, eat and socialize on all the campuses, etc. I see that you’re also looking at Pomona. To my knowledge, they are more diverse plus give more financial aid. Not to mention that after this semester, a lot of freshmen and sophomore are trying to transfer out to other schools. My incoming 2018 class had 14 black freshmen and including my friend who recently committed suicide, 4 have left and 10 students remain and none of them even want to be here. It is still up to you to choose your school. I just remember doing the discover scripps program and being accepted and coming here and it was a completely different experience than what I had been shown. Racism and microaggressions happen on a daily basis. The issue is that you’re supposed to be here getting an education and instead you spend your time trying to help make it better for other students and protesting because diversity is not up to par and the students are left to fend for themselves, with no aid from administration.
