I’m a senior in college. I “should have” graduated in 2018, but because I messed up most of my schooling after sophomore year (depression) I’m still in college without a declaredMajor
My idea of college is just to get a stable career. I decided to major in accounting, which I don’t mind at all, but I’m at a point where I don’t know what to do.
Because of my bad grades I haven’t applied into the accounting major yet. (I need a 3.3 but i currently have a 3.2.)
My plan is to raise my grades up and apply and the end of the semester and hopefully get in. Explain my circumstances (depression) and hope I get in. But should I just give up? And look for something else. My chances are low… I’ve retaken accounting courses (some up to 5 times)… I just need some advice… what should I do?
If you have to take the courses 5 times, it is not for you. Is there any other business course you have taken and done well in? Marketing, for example? I’m just thinking that a major in that same family might be best because you probably have the most credits that could be applied to get you to graduation.
I don’t see how you are a senior in credits needed to graduate if you are undeclared and have been repeating courses. Maybe in your mind you are a senior because you are in your fourth year.
@intparent hear me out. But I still want an honest opinion. Honestly, I’m still “trying” only because I know I didn’t try my hardest. I barely cracked open the book or was really present in class. I was in such a bad mindset following sophomore year, I didn’t See any point in anything.
I’ ended up with 91 credit hours from 9 semesters. 2 freshman, 2 sophomore, 3 junior, 2 senior.
Got a 4.0 Fall semester freshman year and then things started tanking. I tried to pull my life together sophomore year but things never turned around. From there I just went though junior and senior year with As in the “easy” business classes (they didn’t really take any studying) but Bs,Cs of Fs in my accounting classes (since they’re more technical)
I don’t really have anyone to turn to for advice. So I don’t really know what to do from here. I’ve talked to my counselor and she basically said since I’ve repeated so many courses they will not admit me… but if I voice out my problems they might. So I kind of have a chance but it’s short. Do you think they’ll hear me out? Or does it already look too bad? What would you think of my application if you were on the committee? Is it an easy reject?
Tax(previously got a b)
Int. Finance (previously got a c)
“Upper division” (new) business course and got a 4.0 this semester. Do you think the would reconsider me?
Make an appointment with your adviser TODAY, while it’s still early in Senior year. Have him look at the courses you’ve taken, and see what you’ll need to graduate with a major in something sometime soon. Don’t do this on your own, do it with an adviser so you’re sure you don’t miss some small requirement.
Accounting is not for you. They won’t admit you because accounting firms won’t admit someone who had to take technical classes several times, and not just one but several classes.
Cross that out.
Go see your adviser and see what business majors are available with the courses and grades you got.
Depending on your grades in Finance and math you may be able to major in finance, which has excellent job prospects.
I think you should try to raise your grades up first. wondering about whether give up or not is not essential. Just do your best to get higher grades if can’t get in then select plan B, which is other business courses to graduate.
first do the part that you are responsible to do, just focus on raising your grade now and the rest is only taking your mind now, as you put efforts you should be sure things will be fine, best wishes
Take it from an old man…DONT DROP OUT! I have had to work twice as hard my entire life to succeed, take a class here and there and lots of vocational schools. Looking back Id have been a good attorney, yet im just a cop. You can do it.
Then this is where you need to figure things out. A business degree along with a skill set can get you what you need.
Find the easiest business major to graduate in the shortest amount of time. Additionally, get help from the career office on what skills you need to develop and focus on developing those skills.
Sample size of one: undergrad accounting grades were not too impressive. It was hard for me to grasp the concepts from a text book. Once I started working, it all made sense. Passed the CPA exam, got a few years of work experience under my belt and went back to grad school at top tax program. Went to Big 4 (then Big 6) from there.
Bottom line, stay focused and work hard and the sky is the limit.
Also advise: talk to a counselor so that you get your degree without missing any credits that you need.
Also want to note that despite taking classes several times – you have these skills. Virtually every organization needs people with these skills, not just accounting firms. You can for example work in an office with your skills and manage the books or read their spreadsheets or manage a budget or run grants – even if it’s not being their accountant. You have business skills. Valuable ones. Just get a degree.
As far as your depression is concerned, maybe you can think about working in a field that’s not business per se but is more fulfilling – with your business skills this is not just possible but valuable. People in arts fields often lack business skills. Are arts your passion? Museums, schools (art schools, colleges, institutes) need people with business skills. So do theaters, dance organizations etc.
Just get your degree and then find jobs in a field that you enjoy more.
