Im am a Georgia resident Hi, i’m currently a Junior. At the current moment, my chances for getting into UGA - my only college choice in Georgia - are pretty slim. Despite me having a 34 ACT (32 UGA ACT) and will have taken 13 AP’s (technically 15 different APs), I will still only have a 3.6 UGA GPA, which is way below there average of a 4.0 UGA GPA.
Given all these stats, I should not have too much of a hard time to get into my 8 OOS college options, which are all ranked in the top 75 universities by USNWR (but none are top 50s). (and I strategically picked these particular 8 for their low tuitions of less than 30k).
…
Should I go to one of these OOS options or go to Georgia State, which is ranked #223 by USNWR.
**Note: I intend to transfer to UGA after my freshman year.
Thanks for anyone who would like to chime in!
There are other in state options such as KSU, GA southern. I would think you need to see how much merit the OOS options would give. Also what do your parents think?
I’m asian so they want me to go to a better college than both KSU and GaSouthern… also, although my GPA is low I honestly I think i’m just too good for those schools. There’s no middle ground between UGA and State (and southern ksu etc.). It’s not that I won’t be academically challenged… it’s just that I think my own inherent jealousy will basically make me hate my peers at those colleges.
For some reason, even though I don’t probably deserve UGA. I FEEL like i’m entitled to get in (but I won’t), just bc of my ACT and course rigor being so good.
I think Georgia College in Milledgeville is probably the step below UGA and you would be competitive there. With a 34 ACT you may qualify for significant aid at Alabama. It depends on your GPA. Alabama is very transparent about aid offers for merit. It is on their website.
Also your 3.6 may be inflated based on the way UGA weights AP classes so look into how your GPA would be calculated at other schools. Your 13 APs essential give you 13 extra points in their calculation.
You are smart to think about other matches and safeties. That is really important when building your list. But do be sure to apply to UGA. You might well get in.
You have done a lot of research about the admission stats for UGA, but have you asked your guidance counselor about the admission history from your own high school? Students like you from your own school might have a stronger history of admission than you expect.
Yeah! Smart idea… apparently I qualify for the presidential scholarship so I get $25,000 off every year. That’s awesome. Thank you for that suggestion!
