The 3,600 refers to enrollment spaces for the freshman class. Not everyone accepted enrolls, so offers of admission are given to many more students. The mid-tier UCs typically have yield rates of 20%-25%, so offers of admission are given to 4 or 5 times as many students as there are enrollment spots. UCSD has a slightly higher yield rate but I’m too lazy to look it up :)

oh my god thank you so much friend, I was about to have a major panic attack haha.
Yea last year UCSD was at a 37% admit rate-it’ll probably drop this year though
thanks again

There are several numbers:
Number of applicants
2009 - 47046
2008 - 47365
Number of applicants accepted
2009 - 17679 (38%)
2008 - 19717 (42%)
Number of accepted applicants matriculate
2009 - 3749 (21%)
2008 - 4292 (22%)

Each year, the colleges determine their target enrollment. It looks like UCSD is targeting 3600 for this year. Based on past year’s matriculation rate, UCSD will probably accept ~17000 applicants which is about ~35% acceptance rate. If ~21% of those accepted applicants matriculate, UCSD will meet their target enrollment.
