Going India this summer...

Colleges aren't putting as much emphasis on such trips now, because so many people are doing it just for admissions. Won't help that much.

^ comeon not that many people are doing it at all..where i live in westchester NY I know kids who have NEVER BEEN OUT OF North East US ..never mind out of the US

Dont get surprised if you see naked people running around.

? The only naked people I've seen running around are the the kids on the streets who do not have enough money to buy themselves some clothes...

Tribal, if you think that you do not have a very strong immune system, i'd recommend taking the hepatitis shot...

what is a hepatitis shot???

I'm going to India too! I can't wait. And I'm not doing it for admissions purposes because 1) that's lame and 2) I've already been accepted to my dream school.

tribal you DID NOT just ask that.

I don't know what it is either.

Um, tribal, you don't have a hepatitis shot?! have you taken ANY shots for this india trip?!

Because I'm going to India for like the 5th time and I still have to take malaria and typhoid shots...i got my hep shots a while ago.. so I recommend going to your doctor and asking about the shots and vaccinations you`ll need.

take maleria pills. I think I spelled it right.
Buy bottled water

the nurse tried to give me a shot, but I told her I already had it

2 weeks into the trip I get malaria

GET UR DAM SHOTS PPL

dont get scared by the way they look. They are nice, not terrorists.

i think its malaria, excel.

haha.
I JUST FOUND OUT FROM MY MOM THAT I HAVE TO TAKE STUPID TYPHOID PILLS. I HATE PILLS AND I AM AFRAID OF SWALLOWING THEM..
i would rather get a shot.

I'd really recommend you take your shots ( especially for hepatitis ) :

Take a look at this link:

http://www.cdc.gov/travel/indianrg.htm

It's not that bad!! I am going this summer in brit air. If you really are going to their to help the people, then I am sure you won't mind the smell or the people.

You all make it sound like you'll get a disease and die the moment you step off the airplane. It's not that dangerous. Have you guys actually lived there?

i think it might look good on college apps especially if ur ECs include mostly volunteer work, or stuff like habitat for humanity, or other helping other/social work etc., cuz then your ECs will have a theme or whatever that would probably portray your passion to help others etc. like someone said on some other thread, if ur an artist, your ECs should revolve around art club, art competitions, art honor society, art classes, etc. if this is just random that you are doing to make colleges like you, then i doubt it'll be effective, but if ur really going for the reason of helping others, then good for you!

i love how the majority of the people posting didnt even answer your question.

tribal- i think that it will definitely help your application. since the tsunami was such a big event, ANYONE that goes the distance to help will be definitely recognized. it shows character & spirit. especially if your main focus is to show your love for God.

have a great time!! :D
all the besttt

It will look good on your apps, but is that the only reason you are going there? That is where you know that you care more about college than people who are suffering. i lived in India for 8 years and once you see how much people there suffer, you might not think about college apps.

i said - it was our youth groups missions trip ...i did not merely just want to go there because of my college application

I have visited India almost every summer for the past 10 years. I usually dont get sick when I visit but I know quite a few American friends who have gotten sick upon landing in India.. Hence, I advise that he take shots to prevent him from getting diseases which his immune system is not used to..

I didn't mean to sound harsh... It sounded like everybody was just saying that India was just this disease ridden place.
