Going to be a college freshman, but I don't have my license? What should I do?

I'm going to start university in a couple of days. I don't have my license yet. I can drive sort of, but I need a lot more practice before I take my driving test. Until then...my dad is going to be driving me to school and picking me up. I'm buying my parking permit anyway next week. I'm a little embarrassed about the whole thing. I don't want other people to see my dad dropping me off and picking me up like I'm some little kid. :/ My school has many commuters, but it has lots of kids living in dorms, as well. I want to live in the dorms next semester so I won't have to worry about driving, and so I can get more involved on campus. What should I do about the whole license thing? Advice would be great.

I didn’t get my license until I was a college freshman, either. There are college students who get rides from others or take public transportation because they don’t have a car/don’t want to pay for ridiculous parking. You’re not going to be looked at as a little kid simply because you don’t have your license.

Either use public transportation, or move on campus. I know lots of college students who live where public trans. is great and don’t need or want a license.

If you want it, get it. My roommate is a Junior and still doesn’t have her license; she doesn’t care because she lives on campus and can walk everywhere. If you’d like to drive yourself around, then just work toward the license. That’s really the only “solution” here. But personally, I think you’re sweating over nothing. I don’t know who you think is going to be making fun of you for getting dropped off by a parent. I don’t know why you think random passersby will care. Odds are, they won’t.

Most people at my college don’t even have cars. If they need to go somewhere, they bum a ride off someone who does or take the bus. And when it comes time to go home for breaks, their parents come and pick them up. Commuter school or not, I honestly don’t think anyone’s going to care if your dad drops you off. They probably won’t even notice…

I mean, I’m twenty and I just got my license a couple of months ago. Why? I didn’t feel like it and I didn’t need to until recently. It’s not really a big deal. The only difference between me and you is that I lived on campus so I didn’t need to be driven back and forth. If you’re concerned about being picked up and dropped off “like a kid” then practice up and take the test. Otherwise just suck it up and stop worrying about what other students will think. They won’t be paying any attention anyway.

At both of my children’s colleges, freshman are not allowed to have cars because of limited parking and the green campus requirements. It’s not a big deal and the students don’t really care.

The only person that appears concerned about looking “like a kid” is you. College is different. People mind their own business and aren’t pretentious about whether they drive or not.

Some people might even be jealous that you don’t have to drive yourself!

That said, keep on working on the license. You’re going to need it someday, and it might as well be now rather than later.

At my school, lots of students are dropped off by parents or someone - people are envious because they get dropped right in front of the building and don’t have to circle around looking for a parking space. Why waste your money on a parking permit now?

As a dual enrollment high school junior who doesn’t have his license - don’t worry about it. I sit on the curb in the middle of campus waiting for a parent to pick me up and people just mind their own business.

There are usually a lot more people on campus without cars than with them - so they can’t drive themselves anyway. No one is even going to notice that you’re getting picked up and dropped off. I used to get picked up by my parents to go to dinner sometimes and if anything, people were jealous that I was getting real food!
