Hey guys. Have a tough decision here. Was going to major in music until I decided it really wasn't the best idea at the time. So I'm either going to go undecided or computer science and try and make something of a music career in my first year or two of college, and if that doesn't pick up then I am going to continue my CS degree.

I have some friends going to SBCC and it would be fun (and cheaper) to live with them and go to school with them, and SB is nicer than SM, but I'm a musician and I feel I would make better connections and have better opportunities at SMC and being in LA. My friends a producer in LA and I would be working with him a lot and trying to get jobs as a session musician.

Just want to hear some opinions from people who know the areas better than me and what they think! Thanks.

If by SBCC you mean Santa Barbara City College, and SMC is Santa Monica College, then I think you should attend Santa Monica College. It sounds like you will have better opportunities there. One thing to research, though, is the ease of transfer to a 4-year college from either location, should you decide to do that later. Santa Monica College, if I am not mistaken, boasts a pretty high rate of transfer to 4-year universities. It would be hard to imagine not having “fun” in Santa Monica. Coastal town, “hipster” (love that word) progressive community of all ages of people. Lots of traffic especially on the weekends, like most California coastal towns, but a decent public transportation system.
If you can swing it financially I would go there.

College of the Canyons (in Santa Clarita) and Santa Barbara are two of the nicest CCs in the country (dare I say nicer than some CSUs). The Harvards of community college!

I have no experience with Santa Monica.

The opportunities to make connections in music are infinitely better in Los Angeles. It will also be easier to hook up with a good private teacher to possibly continue your music education on the side. Don’t forget that good music teachers are also a great way to connect with the music community at large.

If you go to Santa Monica, you should also try attending UCLA Extension for music. A lot of good people teach there. [Instructors UCLA Extension Music Blog](http://uclaextensionmusic.■■■■■■■■■■■■■/instructors/)

What is a UCLA extension?

I like your idea of staying closer to LA for career opps but you can also check out this link.

This will give you an idea of each and how students are able to transfer to 4 year universities from the two schools you are considering. These are public unis - don’t forget about USC where you could potentially study both CS and music on many different levels.

UCLA extension classes can be taken by students outside the UC system.
