I am deciding between two colleges: Bryn Mawr and Cornell. My heart says Bryn Mawr, but my head says Cornell.

One of the biggest reasons I am a bit more reluctant to go to Bryn Mawr is because it is pretty close to home--30 minutes away. I never imagined myself going to college that close to where I grew up.

Am I missing out on anything by staying fairly close to home? I plan to live on-campus and stay on-campus. Also, I have really not explored Philadelphia that much (I live in the burbs).

Whether you are 30 minutes or 3,000 miles away from home, if you are living on campus, you are away. Saying that “your heart says Bryn Mawr” says it all. Follow your gut instinct pointing you in the right direction, even if it is pointing you close to home. If you choose Bryn Mawr, resist the urge to go home frequently, especially during the first few months. If you have yet to explore Philadelphia, college is the perfect time and what a great way to bond with your new fellow classmates.

Also, make sure your family gives you the space and independence you need. Because you are geographically close, you do not want them popping in on you any time they miss you.

In the end, being close, especially when you need to travel home for breaks or if you are sick and need a little TLC, is a plus.
Good Luck!

Wow, glad I read this post! I grew up in Philly suburbs and went to Bryn Mawr over Brown because of finances a long time ago. Apart from not having to worry about travel plans for Thanksgiving, I had the full “away to college” experience. If you are drawn to BMC, don’t let that worry hold you back (besides, do you have any idea how hard it is to get in and out of Ithaca!). Plus, as you note, there is a world of exploring to do in Philly. I was literally 15 minutes from home, and perhaps 10 minutes from my high school, but never saw anyone from my high school life. I would recommend it, absolutely!
