Going to firm's office hrs, presentations, following up via email...do these rly help

Firms always have on-campus events such as office hrs (resume critique, face time), analyst panels, company presentations, info sessions, and etc to let you know more about the firm and get some face time - all before the interview.

Do these really help as much as recruiters make it out to be? Or would you say it's all about how you do in the interview? Can showing a lot of interest make/break you before being given an offer for an internship / summer analyst?
