going to SUNY as an out-of-state student?

Hi,
I was accepted to suny binghamton and suny albany and I'm currently a high school senior from out of state.

I know that Suny schools have very little students from out of state and am a little worried.

For people who are/have gone to Suny schools, what is the typical attitude about out of state students? Are most students welcoming or unwelcoming to out of state students?

If anybody is going or has gone to a Suny school from as an out of state student, I would love to hear your experiences.

Thanks!

I didn’t go to a SUNY but I did go to 2 schools in NY state for my undergrad. Overall the feeling I got from students was that they loved out of state students. Almost like: “wow, this person is from XY state” of course depending on your state. If you are from CT or NJ, then its so closeby it’s not even mentioned or might be a little local rivalry, but nothing that would make it hard for you. Also, keep in mind these are larger schools so you are bound to find your own niche. I don’t think being out of state would be an issue at all unless you bash NYers of course…
best of luck

Where are you from?
I’m at Binghamton and OOS students are really not a big deal. There’s definitely a siignificant presence of NJ, CT, and MA people. I’ve met people from OR, GA, CA, MO, FL… it’s certainly not unheard of, and it usually leads to a friendly “Oh, so what brings you here?” “Well, I really liked their biochemistry program / Jewish community / price” conversation. You definitely won’t be ostracized or unwelcome.

Come to Binghamton
where the people are nicer
it’s so nice
shh just come

My son is a Freshman at Binghamton and we are OOS and it’s no big deal. Of his suitemates, 1 is from NJ, 1 from PA and 3 from NY…It’s never ever come up in conversation according to him that someone would treat a non- NYer differently…

Thanks to everyone who replied! I was really worried about being an oos student in NY but now I am much more relaxed.
And to rebeccar, I’m from MA. It’s nice to hear there is significant presence of MA students in Binghamton.
