Anyone out there experienced with attending a SUNY school as an OOS student? It appears that there are not a lot of outsiders there, and I'm wondering how that will affect my son who plans to attend SUNY Albany in the fall. Our own state schools state that they make an effort to have a mix of in & out of state students for the benefit of all, and Albany pretty much stated that this was not the case there. What can we expect? Will he be treated any differently?

Well, I decided to attend SUNY Purchase as a transfer (I’ll be a sophomore), and I’ll be OOS (though I imagine your son would have a very different experience from me. I was born and raised in New York, I am familiar with the area and have only actually been gone for 2 years)

It’s true, not many OOSers choose SUNY, I don’t really know of anyone from outside of New York who even considered it at first. From what I can tell, they are increasingly trying to make the environment reasonably comfortable for out of state students. Especially as State school tuition rises and SUNY looks like a good bargain for those who may have not thought of one otherwise. The best thing to do would probably just to advise your son to be himself, get familiar and make a few friends. Good luck to you and your son.

I’m not OOS, but I have lived with several. I go to Binghamton. There is a large number of OOS and international students on my campus. They are no different than any other student. Some even live closer to the school that I do.
