Going to UCR, but looking to transfer...

So it looks like most schools just want me on their waitlist (UCI, UCD, and UCSD) and i got rejected from UCLA....so it looks like I will be attending UCR this upcoming year. However i want to eventually transfer out. The plan is to try and transfer to USC after one year, if i don't get in i'll try again for USC and UCLA after another year....are there certain courses i have to take? do you guys think i can get into USC if i just get a 4.0?

Oh hey! :slight_smile: I have the same plan as you! (I’m planning to go to UCR for a year, and then transfer to USC, but who knows :slight_smile: I may end up loving UCR and stay there for the rest of undergrad and you may too!) If you look at the USC Transfer Decisions for 2011, you’ll see A LOT of transfers making it in with 3.7s-4.0s. Keep in mind that if you’re planning to transfer after a year, they may look at your high school transcript, SAT/ACT scores, and extracurricular activities. Be sure not to let your grades slip once you’re at UCR! If you look at the USC website, there are certain classes that transfers have to complete before going into USC, and there are classes that transfers HAVE to take at USC. Just google “USC transfer.” Oh! And if you have a minimum of 30 credits, they possibly won’t look at your high school stuff. :slight_smile: Good luck and hope to see you at UCR? xD

oh and for UC-to-UC transfers, you have to have a minimum of 60 units and complete your GEs and pre-reqs for your major to transfer.

@NanaFiore
Thanks a lot! I really appreciate your answer! I know I may come to like it at UCR however i’ve wanted to go to USC since the third grade, many of my cousins have gone there, i have been on their campus many times, and i know my desire to go there won’t change. Good luck to you too!

I heard it’s really hard to transfer to another UC compared to a CC though…

UC to UC (and USC) transfer is difficult. I really suggest going to a CC first. It will be cheaper, you have a better shot at being admitted, and the classes are way easier. But really, the choice is up to you. Just make sure you think it through.

^^It is.

Anyway, If USC is your goal, it doesn’t hurt to try since USC is not bound by the same transfer rules the UC’s are bound by. They don’t have to give community college students priority. If you apply for sophomore transfer though, USC is going to evaluate you based on high school grades and SAT scores…again. So if you didn’t get in the first time around, chances are that you won’t after one year unless you do exceedingly well in the one or two quarters at UCR that you will be evaluated by. If you try hard though, I’m sure you can make it in 2 years. The best thing to do is to contact the USC admissions people directly. They are extremely helpful (even though I did not end up applying for transfer).

For UC-UC transfer, it’s a whole different game. Don’t even try one year transfer. It won’t happen for most UC’s (and definitely won’t happen for UCLA). You need 90 quarter units completed by the time you transfer. If you only have 60 units by the time of transfer, you’ll be rejected (and probably on academic probation at UCR lol). GE’s are NOT an admission requirement. I don’t even know if they are considered a factor, some argue they are, some say they aren’t. It’s best to do them anyway since that’s less time wasted once you get to UCLA. Pre-reqs. are crucial, yes. Missing a few, or even one for more competitive majors often rejects in auto-rejection. Make sure to do extensive research on the subject. There are some applying to UCLA from UCR this year. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to see how they’e approaching the task:

Try not to let thoughts of transferring ruin your experience though. Try to learn to like UCR. The first two years will fly by and you will wish you enjoyed them some more. Good luck with all your efforts!

EDIT: And on the not-letting-transferring-ruin-your-experience thought…this is a really great read lol:

Like all the other comments have mentioned, I also advise you attend CC and then transfer.

Here’s why:

1) Cheaper
2) Easier to get a 4.0 because unlike UC’s, A- and A are weighted alike (which I think is unfair but whatever)
3) Easier to transfer to a 4-year university from
4) Once you transfer, there is going to be scholarships (specifically for CC Transfer students) that you can apply for. You wouldn’t have the same financial opportunities if you transferred from another 4-yr college.
5) More relaxed environment I should think.

Hope this helps. And good luck with USC!

@sportsfan
don’t even bother.

First of all, here are the things that I would say if I’m nice enough to talk to people that are in such situation
1)why are you wasting money?
2)why not go to a community college?
3)why go to a school you don’t want to go?
4)etc, etc, etc

*personally, I think there are some opinion that I should present despite sounding like a jerk. And if you think I am a jerk, you are wrong. My presence here is to help out possible students, go check out some of my post if you don’t believe me.

BUT I’m not so nice to people who go to UCR just because they didn’t get into a different school

 1. get the **** out, the school doesn’t need people who feel that UCR is nothing to them. Some people want the acceptance letter to UCR, but thanks to people like you, they are forced to go elsewhere.
 2. are you rich or something? If you prefer to throw your money around, give it to charity. And if you say “but i get financial aid” then save the government some money
 3. never, ever, waste your time here. Why bother? If you think this school is such a waste of time (which you made it sound like through your opinion) why not work harder so that you can get into schools that you like in the first place??

i agree with the above post, why waste money and go to a school that you want to transfer from the start, doesn’t make that much sense, just go community college since they give priority than other colleges and you save at least 30k for one year, it sounds like your parents are forcing you to go to a UC because you seem uninterested at going to ucr

@stevololpb:

telling him that going to UCR is money wasting wasn’t the main point I was trying to make since there are a couple of people above me already mentioned. Personally, I just hate how people disrespect the school so much that they feel like it is something they can ignore. If a school didn’t accept you, then you are not worthy enough for the school during your high school career. Besides, the act of transferring from a UC to another UC means that you will be taking up TWO spots in the admission. Such is probably the concern for UC transfers (probably any 4-year university transfers) into another 4-year university because you are given a chance at higher education, yet you wish to take up other people’s opportunity. But by all means, transfer if they want, a voice of an individual will not affect anything or anyone.

wow…
okay well first of all i only have to pay a couple hundred dollars per quarter at ucr because of sholarships/aid…
Also, i’ve looked online at the threads and a lot of people get into usc from ucr. I don’t want to go to a CC because the experience is not the same and i know i can do well at ucr.
Finally, they don’t look at my high school stuff as long as i have 30+ credits
