going west

I'm from the east coast [nyc] does anyone know how ppl adjust? my cc's all advise against it cause "the west coast cultures completely different and all that" Are there people from nyc at USC?? i do think USC is a great school for me but then again, I've never been there [or cali] so i don't know and cant decide whether or not to follow my cc's advice... so yeah, help! thanks

One of my friends is from Buffalo NY and he seems to be adjusting w/o much problem. I'm from a southern state (Oklahoma/texas) and yes the climate and some things differ but I managed to adjust without too much trouble. Unless you REALLY REALLY love the cold climate and love NY (I mean do you love it so much you can't live anywhere else?) I wouldn't suggest coming here. I personally like the so cal weather so...

try new things...experience something first hand life West Coast lifestyle can't be put into words...its a complete different mind-state and you'll learn new things...basically every experience is new and who doesn't like new things...=]

i'm from CO a state with true 4 Seasons and the great thing about living in CA, there's almost every type of weather you could ask for

Keep in mind that USC students come from all over the world, so the majority of students aren't of "west coast culture." I have a couple friends from New York, and they never seem to need any adjusting because pretty much everyone fits right in. The only thing is, if you have an accent, it'll get some comments. :o

I'm from NYC. Don't worry about the culture thing - honestly the differences between LA and NYC are minor. Everything you like about NY, you should be able to find around LA. I think it's a great place to live for 4 years (although i plan on returning to NY after i graduate).

Anyway, there are a lot of east coast kids around USC.

My S's room mate is from Boston. The rest of the kids on his dorm floor are from various parts of CA & all over, including one kid from Hong Kong we met. Everyone seemed very friendly & in a school as big & diverse as USC, you can find your niche if you try, both in school & in the larger community. My S & his friends have been very happy at USC & all have transitioned well.

ok. so you know how a lot of people have misconceptions [at least i believe they are] of how nyc is very dangerous, excessive crimes, etc. would one say the neighborhood around USC is more dangerous, about the same, or in no way, comparable to NYC??
Also, thank you everyone for your reassurances! its good to hear that there are many kids from the east coast and no, i do not have an accent [hopefully not anyway haha]

my older brother got into both upenn and ucb and decided to go to ucb cuz he wanted to experiance the different culture\diversity and be around different ppl than rich new englanders (we live in fairfield county, ct, btw)... he was able to adjust just fine

At USC, I believe as long as you use common sense, you are as safe (or safer) than you'd be in virtually any urban campus. The DPS does a very good job of keeping the campus & area for about 2 miles around campus very safe. USC keeps buying up property around the school & turning it into student housing or facilities. My S has not mentioned any safety worries while he's been at USC, nor have my friends' kids (who also attend(ed) USC).

Just don't be one of the guys who talks about home constantly. That gets really old really fast.

haha i will try to restrain myself.. ahh i'm so excited!! socal =DDDDDD

are there subways to campus?? buses?

From the airport, take the shuttle bus to the green line, take the green line to the harbor freeway station, take the harbor freeway bus to the exposition station, and walk to campus. Or if during the day Mon-Fri, take the harbor freeway bus to Union Station (Can also take the green line to the blue line to Union Station) and take the USC tram from Union Station directly to campus

There are inexpensive "Dart" shuttle buses and a short "light rail" that offers limited service. Those are the main things my S has been made aware of so far. There is a TON available on or near campus, as merchants want your $$$ & want it convenient for you to spend it.

haha that was detailed thanks ! now all i gotta do is get in ...
