Goizueta Scholars Applicants?

hey i got an email that i was selected as a finalist, now to be honest im not exactly positive how the process works so can somebody fill me in? and is that accurate that only 10 finalists were selected? where did that information come from
and of the 10 (if thats right) how many get the scholarship?
thanks alot

tennis89: Our e-mail stated that 10 finalists were chosen for Goizueta Scholars period....No mention of anything else (or of any process of semi-finalists)...I'm assuming that means all 10 of you are attending finalist weekend.....

my finalist email said nothing about 10 finalists, thats wierd...and yes ill be attending the weekend

sorry rodney just a little confused...did the email say 10 finalists were chosen, and of that group maybe like 5 will get the money, or did it say 10 goizueta scholarships will be awarded from the finalist pool after the weekend? just wanted some clarification cause I applied to the program with little previous knowledge on how it worked but now that i was selected im just trying to figure it all out

Here it is for those of you who want to see:

The Goizueta Scholar Selection Committee has completed an initial review of nominees for our inaugural program. We regret to inform you that after careful consideration of your application and nomination materials, you were not among those chosen as a semifinalist for the Goizueta Scholars Program. The process was extremely selective and we identified only 10 finalists from among a significant pool of applicants with extraordinary credentials.

Your application for admission to Emory will be reviewed in the Regular Decision applicant pool. Admission decisions will be mailed by April 1, 2008. Students offered admission will have until May 1, 2008 to respond to our offer with a non-refundable $450 deposit.

You should make plans to apply for need-based financial aid if you have not done so. With over 60% of Emory’s first year class receiving some form of financial assistance to attend, it is common for Scholar nominees to qualify for substantial need-based financial aid. Emory has just announced a substantial new financial aid program that will provide grants to allow students with family income of $50,000 or less to graduate with no need-based loans, and students from families with income between $50,000 and $100,000 to cap need-based loan amounts over four years at $15,000. You may register for and complete the College Scholarship Service PROFILE online at CSS/Profile - student financial aid application or by phone at 800-778-6888 by February 15, 2007. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is also required of all financial aid applicants. You may submit the FAFSA online at FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid by February 15, 2008. Both forms are required by our Financial Aid Office in order to evaluate your eligibility for financial aid.

We greatly appreciate your interest in Emory University and look forward to the further review of your application for admission. You are strongly encouraged to visit the campus if you have not had the opportunity to do so. You may contact the Admission Office to make arrangements.

Please accept our best wishes for continued success during your senior year.

Sincerely,

Jean D. Jordan Andrea S. Hershatter
Dean of Admission Associate Dean
Emory College BBA Program Director
Goizuetta Business School

This was the acceptance one:

Congratulations! On behalf of the Admission Committee and the Goizueta Scholars Selection Committee, we are delighted to invite you to join the Emory University community as a member of the Emory University Class of 2012. We are also pleased to inform you that you have been chosen from among a highly competitive applicant pool as a finalist in the 2008 Goizueta Scholars Program. You should be very proud; this elite group of nominees represents the top business-bound, high school seniors in the nation.

In the review, faculty and senior administrators from the Goizueta Business School selected a group of finalists who will be invited to campus for interviews February 27 – March 1. Attendance for the full four day Scholar Finalist Weekend is required of finalists who wish to remain in competition for a four-year full tuition Emory scholarship. All finalists will be notified of their status in the Goizueta Scholars program by March 7.

If you are a US citizen or Permanent Resident of the US, you should make plans to apply for need-based financial aid as the Emory Scholars review process continues. With over 60% of Emory’s first year class receiving some form of financial assistance to attend, it is common for Emory Scholar nominees to qualify for substantial need-based financial aid. You may register for and complete the College Scholarship Service PROFILE online at CSS/Profile - student financial aid application or by phone at 800-778-6888 by February 15, 2008. Please note: Need based financial aid is not available for international students.

In order to reserve your place in the Class of 2012, you must send a nonrefundable deposit of $450 along with the enclosed Admission Response Card as soon as possible and no later than May 1, 2008. (This deposit includes an orientation fee, a housing reservation fee and a credit towards the first semester tuition.) Please note that a deposit should only be sent to the one school you plan to attend.

Carefully read the Acceptance Agreement, which will be enclosed in your admit packet, that outlines the terms of your admission. Your admission is conditional pending receipt of your final secondary school transcript and documentation of graduation. Be advised that the Admission Committee expects the same level of academic achievement and personal conduct through the completion of your senior year. Failure to maintain this level of performance and schedule of courses could result in a withdrawal of our admission offer.

Later this spring you will receive information about orientation and academic advising from the Dean of Emory College, as well as additional information regarding a special orientation get-together for Goizueta Scholars candidates. New student housing information will be sent in April. If you should need further information regarding your enrollment or the Goizueta Scholar Program, please contact us at 1-800-727-6036.

Outstanding students are an essential element of a great university. We look forward to having you join the Emory community next fall.

Sincerely

So I called the office and they told me that I was read as a Goizueta Scholar but was coded as an Emory Scholars in their system. So technically I got my goizueta scholar rejection early, but the letter said Emory Scholars on it.

does any1 know what the finalist trip includes? like what do we do, who do we interview with, and how do we spend our 4 or 5 days at the school? also, any chance emory pays for it or is that out of our pocket?

I also am a finalist for the Goizueta Scholars Program! I got that same email, and I have the same questions as you, tennis89. The email mentions the visit to campus but doesn't talk about what we'll be doing there (I assume there'll be interviews...) or if we have to pay. I'm thinking that we'll get mail from Emory soon telling us more information about the program.

tennis89 and iflylikepaper,

Congratulations on being named finalists for the Goizueta Scholars Program!

Because this program is only in its second year, there seems to be a lot of tweaking occurring, so I can imagine why you have questions. The program hasn't been in existence long enough to establish any real pattern for how they are doing things. This said, there are some certainties. First, the finalist trip will be paid for by Emory University, so there will be no cost to you, except for incidentals. As with the Emory Scholars Program, if you do NOT attend, you will not be considered for any scholarship. I believe that last year, the MINIMUM scholarship awarded to finalists was 2/3 Tuition, and then it goes up from there, depending on how much they like you. There will be Emory tours, interaction with BBA program students, Goizueta faculty, and interviews.

The interviews are important to establishing the best impression for eventual awarding of scholarships. In my interactions with Emory students that are Emory Scholars, I think there's not much you can do to really prepare for specific interviews.

However, there are thing you can do to prepare yourself in general. Interviewers will want to know who you are; what your make-up is as a person. What are your goals, academically, perhaps potential career aspirations? What motivates you? Everybody meets up with obstacles in pursuit of goals -- how do you overcome these? What are significant issues that you feel to be important in the business world today? (i.e., corporate governance and business ethics -- see the film "Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room"; globalization and impact of outsourcing; decline of manufacturing industries in the U.S.; the future of a U.S. services-based economy; etc.) These are all issues that concern business executives today. Showing an awareness and interest in these issues will help make a positive impression. Knowing that you've established a path, no matter how tentative, will further the impression.

As much as a business focus, show that you are a complete individual. The reason why Emory has a 2-year BBA program (vs. a 4-year program) is that the underlying educational philosophy of Emory values the tradition of a broad liberal arts education. Emory wants to know that you will develop a diversity of interests and be able to recognize opportunities in the world, not just apply an accounting principal or know best practices for management. They want to know that you are keen toward applying critical thinking skills and strong interpersonal/communication abilities. Try to demonstrate the kind of breadth in who you are.

Now, for any questions, my recommendation is to contact Andrea Hershatter. See this link: Faculty Profiles

Good luck!

omg...i'm in SC for a piano competition and I just found the email in my spam. I'm so happy : ) if anybody else has any information about how much we get and what happens on the finalist weekend, i'd appreciate it if you would post it!

norcaldad: thanks alot for the info! that really helped alot, i appreciate it. as for the belief that finalists get minimum 2/3 tuition, that would be amazing, hope its true! any more info would be great, thanks alot

What should I do if I still have not found out?

if you have not received an email yet whether or not you have gotten in or rejected, id first probably check any possible spam mail you have...if nothing is there, i'd simply call the school and ask for admissions

does anybody know how the process works if some1 is offered a scholarship, whether it be 2/3 or full tuition....are we given some sort of timetable to accept the offer or else they give it to someone else? and if we accept are we asked to withdraw all other applications?

tennis89...where do you live? tell me a little about yourself. I'm sure I'll be meeting you scholars weekend

have any goizueta scholars finalists been contacted yet with more information on our trip? i heard we were supposed to get calls but im yet to hear anything...

bump......
has anyone been contacted with information on the weekend?

i got an email a few days ago...haven't replied back yet

^^ I understand that this thread is fairly old, but I was hoping that some of the people from last year or the year before could give me some feedback as to how the process works. I recently was notified that I was accepted as a Goizueta finalist and I was hoping that some people could fill me in. Are really only 10 people selected as finalists? Does being a finalist guarantee you a scholarship? How many of the finalists actually become scholars? What exactly goes down at the scholars weekend? Thanks guys.
