I applied to GS IB and S&T positions a few weeks ago and got an email today saying that I had been invited for the "Final Round" of interviews for Operations! I'd appreciate it if you could answer the following questions for me:

1) I've heard an Operations is not the place to be.... I'm an Industrial Engineering major and I would like to work in IB ( I think of it as a 2 yr boot camp... ).. Is Operations similar in terms of a learning experience and worth doing?
2) Now, I haven't gone on any first round of interviews so not sure how I made it to the final round.. Does this happen or is this probably a mistake you think? Since I had applied to IB and S&T, how did I get called for an Operations internship?
3) When I applied to these internships, I listed my current mid-tier non-target university on my application.. However, I am now going to be transferring to University of Michigan Ann Arbor as a transfer. How would get this changed in my application since I can't find a contact address at all for HR department. Would reapplying be a good idea or would that jeopardize my chances?

Question) Now, I haven’t gone on any first round of interviews so not sure how I made it to the final round.

Answer) I had been invited for the “Final Round” of interviews for Operations!

But seriously, operations does have a pretty bad rep according to my bro (summer analyst at GS) because its a backoffice type position. then again, that is according to very high standards. ultimately, gs is a very prestigious company so you can’t really go wrong with it in my opinion, it has name brand recognition.

The back office is totally different from IB and S&T. It’s next to impossible to get a summer analyst position with GS, even from a school like UMich, especially in this economy. It sounds like you’re a sophomore, so if you don’t have any other positions lined up, I’d take this one. Back office is infinitely better than nothing, and GS is still GS. Do your research, learn what Operations does, and knock 'em dead in the interview.
