Good Choices

Hi. I was just pondering the many colleges/universities that I can go to. As I was thinking I became overwhelmed with all the colleges out there. I am hoping that you may be able to help me narrow down the choices for me. Here are the facts.

I have been out of high school for a decade or so. I have just graduated from a community college with honors - 3.7 GPA out of 4.0 My major is Sociology. I also never took the SAT's. I have a few choices of where I want to attend but I am not sure 1) If I could be accepted and 2) if there are better choices. My selection of schools are BU, University of Virginia, Syracuse, West Virginia University. What do you think my odds are of acceptance at the aforementioned schools? Are there more appropriate options that would accept me?

One more thing. The size of the school, location, whether it is rural, urban, or suburban ect does not matter to me.

Assuming you’re a VA resident and attended a VA CC, then your CC advisor would be the best person to tell you your possibility of being accepted at UVA and WVU, particularly if there are articulation agreements with these schools.

Sociology is offered at just about any college, so other factors to take into consideration in where to apply are:

UG sociology ranking (take them with a grain of salt)
likelihood of acceptance
affordability
other college factors (which you say don’t matter)

You bring up a good point re: where I live. I am actually not a Virginia resident. I live in Florida.

Then why not some FL schools? Particularly if cost is a factor.

UVA treats OOS students like IS for need based FA, not sure about WVU.

Well I looked at Florida schools but one thing is I can not take the heat in Florida. It is way to hot. Plus I have my heart set on schools away from home. I lived here my entire life and I need a change. Really that is the only thing that I want, is a good school away from home that has a good sociology program that would accept me.

I do not want to be a pain but all I really want is some choices as to colleges that have a good program and that I have a decent shot at being accepted. That is really why I am here. I do not know if my selection of colleges is a good selection OR perhaps there are equally good schools that I have not considered or some I may not know of.

I am also applying to uva and from what I heard, the acceptance rate for oos is around 26% while instate is around 46% and that A&S has the highest accept rate.

Best of luck to you!

I understand that the acceptance rate is 26% which means that it would be very difficult to be admitted, however, would you think that my odds, with my stats, make me a more viable candidate for admissions?

But please remember I am looking for a list of schools that I would be a good candidate for not the acceptance rate for transfer students even though that shows the level of competition for a given school. I am looking for colleges where I have a decent chance of being admitted, with my stats, and nothing else.

Thanks! Assuming you meet all the course requirements listed on the transfer page for UVA, you have a decent shot based off your GPA alone. The average GPA listed on the transfer website is 3.5 but it’s a little higher for out of state. I believe 1/3 of the transfer class is non-traditionally aged so UVA does like them.

Essays are most likely the second most important part of transferring. So I guess you can write about your experiences you had the past 10 years. That will definitely make you a unique candidate and improve your chances.

Sorry I couldn’t chance the other schools since I don’t know much about them. Good luck!

Thank you. You have given me very valuable information! Best of luck to you!
