Good debate topics?

ohhh or edward vs jacob

and lol i don’t blame your teacher…i can go from 0 to a crazy twilight fangirl in a split second

Whether morality is objective, whether abstract art is really art.

With the twilight debate, there are 15 girls and 4 boys in my class, so things would get girl catty real fast. Then again, the boys would probably argue sides too lol. That’s how they are.

This would be good, but unfortunately my class has no idea what the words" morality" and" abstract" mean. They would probably throw something random out like Picasso life story or something about world hunger. Idk my class… how do I put it nicely… aren’t the sharpest tools in the shed.

I’m going to steal a few topics from LD that I have debated in the past.

In a democracy, voting ought to be compulsory.

Rehabilitation ought to be valued above retribution in the United States criminal justice system.

Just societies should never deliberately initiate war.

The United States ought to guarantee universal health care for its citizens.

These were the topics that I have liked over the past year. If you end up using one of these, let me know!

Alright I will, hopefully we do something GOOD and not something dumb, like the existence of aliens. Actually that would be kind of interesting, to see what kind of “facts” people bring to support their view.

[Past Public Forum Topics: Speech, Debate: National Forensic League](http://www.nationalforensicleague.org/aspx/nav.aspx?navid=144)
These are the “Public Forum” topics from over the years.
Public Forum topics are often current events/controversy driven

Topics are distinct from resolutions.

A topic is a broad area of knowledge. A resolution is a statement that some debaters argue is true and others argue is false.

Try to choose a resolution rather than choosing a topic. You’ll often find that a debate that is supposed to be about one topic shifts into a seemingly unrelated topic because that’s where the argumentation leads. I recommend approaching the search for a debate topic from the bottom up (what kinds of arguments would be interesting, what statements would those arguments clearly support or contradict, what topics do those statements fall under) rather than from the top down (what topics are interesting, what sides can be taken on a topic, what arguments can be argued for each side).

The [past NFL LD resolutions](http://www.nationalforensicleague.org/aspx/nav.aspx?navid=142&pnavid=227) is a great place to look for ideas.

Good suggestion. My class ALWAYS move ons to some random topic when, they are arguing. Also most of the" topics" we have come up with are mostly one sided. We can’t come to a clear two sided argument for a “topic”.

Resolved: On balance, making assault weapons illegal will prevent crime.

I found the past PF topic (NSA) interesting. My partner and I argued affirmative for each round lol

Wow! That’s funny we went CON each time.

my district is actually doing the topic for another month, and I’m trying to make Blocks for as many arguments as possible, so would you mind messaging me your case since you’re not using it anymore.

Or if your worried about me copying it just send the contention tag lines.
Thanks,
Fellow PFer
