So, ya boi isn’t packin much money, but I do have a 4.0 GPA and currently the president of Math Club. So, I might be aiming high, but are there any colleges giving out free room and board to kids like me? Since the answer is probably no, which engineering schools give a ton of money to transfer students?
State of residency?
Are you low income and potentially eligible for need based aid, or are you looking for merit scholarships?
What year in college are you in?
I’m in Illinois, I like those merit scholarships cause I work hard, and currently my second sem of freshman yr
Unfortunately, large merit scholarships for transfer students are harder to find. Some state universities may have some for their in-state students or students from in-state community colleges only.
Others include:
Tuskegee: https://www.tuskegee.edu/programs-courses/scholarships/transfer-student-scholarships
Mississippi State: https://www.admissions.msstate.edu/transfer/money-matters/scholarships/transfer-scholarships/
Look close at home at https://web.iit.edu/about/quick-facts/by-the-numbers
They have great placement and are building an innovation center… https://energynews.us/2018/12/05/midwest/at-illinois-tech-energy-innovation-and-entrepreneurship-have-new-home/
Built with consult with : https://1871.com/1871_board/howard-tullman/
Who I know. He will help put IIT on the national map. Look at what he did with 1870 in Chicago among other things he has done.
For CPS student’s there are free rides. What school are you transferring from?
Go have a talk with them. They will support kids that are doing well.
Thanks for the help everybody! I now know some colleges to definitely apply to!
I am transferring from College of Lake County in Grayslake, which is by the north illinois border
Check out Iowa State University also.
There is free room and board at GaTech and U of Denver if you are willing to live with freshman in a freshman dorm as an upper classman. However I don’t recommend U of Denver for engineering so much. Which engineering field are you studying? . At GaTech, you have to apply for the job to live in a single room in a freshman dorm, and there are some responsibilities to organize freshman social events and help out the freshman. Look for resident assistant positions at UIUC, Purdue and other large midwestern engineering colleges as well.
UIUC does offer Resident Advisor position ! Check this carefully. Most students don’t want to bother,
but it turns out that there is PLENTY OF FREE ROOM AND BOARD at all major public universities, if you can stand to live with and help freshman.

In some ways its the most underused way to get financial aid, live with freshman and help them out. It will be a great experience to do this as well, you will develop lifelong friendships.
I only wish parents out there would understand this, but they will thumb their noses at this option to save money, thinking its just about moping up alcohol and vomit. It definitely is not only about that.
Oh wow, I wanna be an RA now! Do you think I can get the job my first semester in as a transfer? If that’s the case, then I only have to worry about tuition then!
I am also a Computer Science/Engineering major
Call around and start to find out the process. Most likely call housing. Just pick anyone just to get educated.
Keep in mind internships also. In your field they tend to make a decent amount. Also co-op programs like Kettering college think you go to school one semester and then work one semester and get paid (to use for tuition). They get hired and co-ops with major companies like Ford. A lot of major universities have co-op also. You might graduate a bit later but it’s usually a wash in the end and you graduate with experience working for real companies which is a huge plus.
Re: #8-10
RA in the dorm jobs can be highly competitive at many colleges, so it may not be wise to assume getting one, especially in your first year at the school. They may require having lived in a dorm or similar before.
@TomatoSmoothie - There are a number of scholarships at Illinois Tech for transfer students, these include Presidential Scholarships and Phi Theta Kappa Scholarships among others. I am a faculty member, not involved in admissions or financial aid but I know that the stated goal is to make our programs financially competitive with state universities.
I believe that Tufts meets full need for all transfer students, but it is pretty selective, especially for engineering
U of Maine at Orono offers in-state tuition. Here is the page that describes in-state matching for transfer students. The programs are ABET accredited. https://go.umaine.edu/apply/scholarships/flagship-match-transfer/
University of Michigan provides very good need based financial aid to transfer students. Here is their out of state student brochure on transfer student financial aid https://finaid.umich.edu/wp-content/uploads/transferbrochure-2018_non-res.pdf There was a young lady on the forum last year from Illinois that got a great offer who also had a 4.0. Run their net price calculator. https://npc.collegeboard.org/app/umich
Thanks everyone for all the help so far! This is so much help haha
