Hi I'm looking for good English 297/298 courses to take this fall 2011. It's ok if it's hard (not TOO time consuming though), as long as it's a rewarding experience (I don't really want a boring repetitive class just to get an easy A; but easy A classes are fine too, as long as it feels like a waste of time.)

I have several choices but have no idea which one to choose:
298: Prof Lisa Makman, Petra Kutters, Korey Jackson, Jeremiah Chamberlin, X. Santamarina, and Caroline Miller (any recommendations or suggestions?)

297: Prof Gillan White (any other sections-it just says "staff"/professors recommended?); for Prof White's class, are the exams and essays/quizzes pretty hard?

Anyone knows who teachers English 297 section 2? it's class no. 18743 taught in MH 3330

also does anyone know if english 297/298 all have a midterm and a final (some say it does on the website but some don't mention)? How hard and time-consuming are they?

For poetry, are memorizations all required?

Are English 297/298 lectures or discussions (less than 20 people per class?) Attendance all required?

Thankyou very much.

I took a 298 class with Catherine Sanok. She was pretty good and knew what she was teaching. You should give her a shot. She is also head of Honors English.

My very good friend in LSA Honors and the English Honors program specifically strongly (yelled at me to post this reply) recommends Gillian White. She’s apparently in charge of Poetry for the Masters of Fine Arts program, the prestigious graduate level literature program at the University. I’ve personally seen White speak, and can attest to her brilliance.

thankyou so much lujustin and intarsia! i think im probably going to take Professor White’s class then (i’ve joined a roundtable poetry discussion once and she was there)

I also heard that Jeremiah Chamberlin was a really good professor whose class would truly improve one’s writing. Any comments on that?

Also…do both of the professors’ classes have 2 exams and quizzes? What about easiness and whether or not it’s too time-consuming…?
Thanks again.

I can’t answer any of your questions Sorry. Rate my Prof may have some info, but I’ve always found it to be unreliably written by the students who were determined to hate the class. The Course Guide information should give a rough idea of the workload and format of grading.
