Good grades, Bad ECs...

I'm currently stressing out because Sophomore year is almost over and I just realized how important ECs are and I barely did any. I'm currently at a 4.4 GPA and Top 5% of ~970 students, so I'm happy with my academics. However, I really want to step up my ECs. I just have no idea what to do. It's too late to start any sport (I think.. unless I do a soccer camp this spring and tryout next year.). Next year I'm planning on joining Math Team, Spanish Honor Society, and National Honor Society. I'm just looking for simple ways to start up my ECs and how I can get involved. Over the summer, I think I'll be doing a lot of volunteer work and probably finding a job. I'm also interested in computers (Computer Science, Engineering). I'll take all the advice from you guys, because I know CC is smart. T hanks :)

I don’t know if this is your kind of thing, but you could try picking up a musical instrument. I was playing with honor groups and getting awards with just a year of playing an instrument and if you put in more work than I did you could probably do it way sooner. It’s a great EC to do.

What do you like? Get involved in whatever the answer to that question is.

A lot of future comp sci majors learn programming languages. I’m not well versed in this type of stuff at all, but you could learn C, python, java, etc. if you want.

pursue your passion…

If I were to learn some programming languages, how could I use that skill as an “Extracurricular”? That is something I would like to do, I just can’t see what’d I’d do with it.

Ask people if they need some coding done. For a website, program, etc.

Not sure how to put in app, though.

Bump, Anyone else?

I’m in a very similar position. Depending where you are planning on applying, EC’s may (or may not) play a large role. Universities like to see leadership roles though. Try to do some volunteer (or community) work and/or gain an officer position in a school organization/club.

Coincidentally, I also plan on majoring in Computer Science. After you learn a programming language or two, you could try developing some applications/web content for a company. Also, if you have a computer/math club at your school, join it! And if you don’t have one… create one! (it shows initiative)

what are you doing right now? go in depth and expand in it.

Could learning new programming languages possibly be considered an EC? I’m in a nearly identical position right now.

Join activities that you have a passion in. That way you will be more devoted in that particular activity.

@semaphore: I suppose so. I’m tempted to write them as an EC. :P

If anyone has any more information about learning languages for ECs, that’d be great.

@Viperr It depends on what language. I study Russian and Chinese with a side of Dari and I’ve found things like GLOSS, FSI,and Headstart that really help. What language are you interested in?

Sent from my WX445 using CC

Start your own club, that’s what I did.

@smdporfavor: what club did you start and how did you do it?

LOL. Well, let’s just say I have a fairly unique hobby and I basically went to the lady in charge of clubs and explained what I wanted to do and how I would essentially run the club and she was like, “okay.” I had to get 15 people to sign a petition saying they would join, then I found two teachers to sponsor/be chaperones for the club. So now, every Thursday, we meet and discuss club-related affairs… Yep.

I think I’m going to join a soccer club with my friend and hope to make the team next year, and maybe resort to track or cross country if I don’t make it. I’ll also do some programming, honor societies, and maybe join the Math Team. I hope all goes goes. :x

@smdporfavor: that’s so cool! Did your sponsor have to be a teacher from your school or could it have been any teacher from past schools(elementary and middle school)?

Had to be a HS teacher, so I asked my photography teacher LOL and the school psychologist wanted to help because they’re friends.
