Do I need really good grades for financial aid??

Grades matter for merit based aid but not for Federal or State issued aid.

But grades can affect a financial aid package. Some schools will award more grant $ (few loans) to a strong student and more loans (less grant $) to a weaker student.

Right. We lost some grant money out of our son't finaid package the second year, it was replaced with loans. When we inquired, were told it was because his GPA dropped below a certain point. Told to call back if it went back up. The GPA the first quarter of the second year was back up, and they sent us a mid-year revised finaid package that included the grant money, and reduced the loan money.

What would be a decent GPA for a good amount of grant?? Just non-weighted
I am aiming for a 32 on the ACT's this year as a sophomore. I am taking it in june.

Sb7, what percentage of the grants were replaced by loans? Like 10% or more like 50% or more? First year gpa was what, @3.0 or lower or higher? Though you were not aware of it until it happened, did you find out if this policy was published or disclosed anywhere? It almost seems like bait and switching.

dt:

The threshold was GPA 3.5, and I found out (later) that the requirement is published online. UCLA includes some GPA-dependent scholarships in their need-based packages, but the offer itself doesn't clearly identify the requirements that need to be met on a continuing basis to be eligible.

It was about 15% of the aid package, as I recall.
