Hey everyone, I was hoping to get some recommendations on what grad schools have good HCI departments or embedded systems departments. I've been working an HCI project and along with an embedded systems project this summer and it's pretty darn cool so I'm wondering if anyone knows some good departments to look at, US and non-US.

Many iSchools have Human-Computer Interaction (HCIs) programs. University of Michigan School of Information has a good HCI program.

Penn State is good too

What do you mean ischool? All I get when I search iSchool is librarian oriented schools.

[SI MSI Degree: Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) Graduate Program](http://www.si.umich.edu/msi/hci.htm)

iSchools are just information science schools, though some schools (like Syracuse for instance) have their programs rooted in Library sciences, others like Penn State are built from the ground up. Having a root in Lib sci is not necessarily bad. You just have to look at the individual programs.

Another great program would be Stanford (I believe they have an HCI group)

main organization: [Welcome — Association for Computing Machinery](http://www.acm.org/)

special interest groups ; [Special Interest Groups — Association for Computing Machinery](http://www.acm.org/sigs)
Computer-Human Interaction (CHI) : [Special Interest Groups — Association for Computing Machinery](http://www.acm.org/sigs)

The SIGS all overlap and are intertwined. Sig is just a way to make things a bit easiler to look at. Look for the field and lead researcher.

CMU is probably near the top, but other notable programs include Stanford (home of SRI where a lot of the early HCI work was done), Georgia Tech and Michigan. Not sure if MIT offers an explicit HCI degree, but MIT’s Media Lab is extremely well-known and deals with aspects of HCI.

The above programs are the only ones I know about, but I am not an HCI student.
